Editorial Reviews

From the Author

An article offering a feminist reading of the poem that opens the collection, inspired by and entitled after Kamille Freske's sublime painting Shadow Whisper, on domestic violence, has appeared in Environment Benefits; here are some quotations:

'The irony of a feminist reading of 'Shadow Whispers' is that it was written by a man. But this may be one of the beauties of this poem, all, I believe, brought about by its ability to transcend sensibilities and achieve a 'universal' and timeless aura.'

'The poem's imagery is powerful, daunting and intense.'

'If it is true that 'the feminine sentence' does not need to be written by women, Bulla's 'Shadow Whisper' is as feminine as it gets, intense, complex, compelling and deeply poetic.'

Queer Poems by Adriano Bulla is a rewarding collection of mixed and eclectic poetry that is as rich and diverse as the subject matter that it takes on and explores. One of my favorites, Dusty Grins is wonderful in its delivery and tone, giving you the sense that you’re taking this sidewalk stroll yourself. I liked Never Mind, a part of me feels I got it and could enjoy the beauty that it takes from its form and the path that it follows. The Drip of Copper was wonderfully insightful and a bit sad. Reflection Past is short yet, says quite a great deal. And Between the Drops is very moving. The author is outstanding and does a beautiful job in the delivery and expression that he presents in this moving reflection of an often marginalized and or silenced community of people.

Adriano Bulla defines himself 'a servant of Calliope': he does not choose when to write; poems and prose come to him unexpectedly, with a force he cannot resist. Born in Italy, he now lives in London, his adoptive city. He has always refused to stick to genres and formats, experimenting with new voices and new forms of expression - poems he terms flicker poems.

The preface from the publisher of this volume states Bulla's intentions and success well: QUEER POEMS is a collection of poems about 'queer' people, feelings and situations. It is about the soul of the downtrodden, the disenfranchised, the sufferers of this world, Queer Poems, often dark and intense, includes texts about LGBT issues, androgyny, polygamy, domestic violence, rape, homelessness, and more. Intense imagery and hinted rhymes play with the rhythm and structure of the poems, by the author himself described as 'following the way T.S. Eliot's 'Preludes' opened'.

Lament to Lust
In waves who surge along the Wolds
The stars are kissing leaves that rust
With memories of lust and glow
On parted lips and burning eyes
Like raging fires lost in caves
Embracing secrets past in sighs
That whisper far, forgotten tales
Of pain and joy;
Of lutes strung on remote refrains
In search of unison and lain
Like lambs on altars to be slain.

Armoured Hearts

Forever lost upon the shore
With shells of smiles that shift
The sand left standing soft with scorn
But dry as skin sloughed off by snakes
That burn on pyres high above the tide
Absconded by a Sun that that sees
No sighs in silent lights
Yet cast-off clothes so sparkling bright
Like armoured hearts upright at morn
To face the fleet of flotsam found
Upon the waves of woven words
Winking at the wind that woes In whispers

Adriano Bulla is a poet who gets our attention and holds it well. Grady Harp, March 15

Queer Poems written by Adriano Bulla is an emotional twist that relates to the world as an whole!

Mr. Bulla uses words within his writing that give the reader something to think about and maybe run towards the dictionary.
I enjoy the man who wrote these extra-ordinary pieces of poetry. He is defending, speaking out, and or bringing awareness to
those who feels or been left out of society because of sexual preference, race or homelessness.

All the pieces touched my heart and I will have to read this book more than once. However, Born in Between had meaning and was talking to me: "By tongues and claws of ignorant sandpaper."

The "Queer Poems" can also bring solace to ones soul, give the reader a thing or two to think about and finally have you search within your heart and have you think and react differently towards another human that is different from you.

Thank you Mr. Bulla for sharing your inner thoughts thru your poems and writing. Much thanks!

Poems about diversity and the humanity. Mr. Bulla has done a great job making me feel the importance of compassion and diversity. As humans, we don't show enough compassion for those who may be different from us. I enjoyed this collection and I'm going to check out other reads by him. Thank you for this great read!
