Editorial Reviews
Original soundtrack to the 2012 motion picture written and directed by Quentin Tarantino. Includes music from Ennio Morricone, Jim Croce, Rick Ross, James Brown and 2Pac, Louis Bacalov and many others. The film stars Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington and Samuel L. Jackson. Django (Foxx) is a slave living in the Deep South after having been separated from his wife Broomhilda (Washington). When Django is held for a slave auction, Dr. King Schultz (Waltz), a bounty hunter who poses as a dentist, frees Django from his vicious masters, the Speck brothers (James Remar and James Russo), and gives him the option of hunting down and killing the Brittle Brothers, a ruthless gang of killers whom only Django has seen. In return, Schultz will free Django from slavery completely and help rescue Broomhilda from the plantation of the charming but ruthless owner, Calvin Candie (DiCaprio).

There are a lot of great songs on this album - a few newly produced for the film, but most are older songs. My two personal favorites are "Who Did That to You?" by John Legend and "100 Black Coffins" by Rick Ross. But every song on this album is memorable.
Instead of using an original score, Tarantino uses existing music from classic films. Therefore, on this album you will find tracks from the great film composers Ennio Morricone and Jerry Goldsmith. Among them, "Sister Sara's Theme" and "Un Monumento" are the best. These cues have been taken from other westerns and have been re-purposed for use in Tarantino's film.
Another unqiue touch is that this album includes some dialogue from the film... normally this would be useless on a soundtrack, but the writing in this film is so great and the actors deliver the lines in a way that almost make it sound musical. So while listening to this album, every once in a while you'll hear a memorable quote from Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, and Samuel L. Jackson, among others.
**Note: iTunes seems to have an exclusive 24th track - "Ode to Django" by RZA.
Amazon is selling this for less than half of the cost of the same album on iTunes. Five Dollars versus fourteen dollars (prices on Christmas 2012). It's a pretty great value.
Keep in mind when you buy from Amazon, you don't get the final "credits" track from RZA. This track is essential to the soundtrack and will set you back a dollar and thirty cents on iTunes. It's an original track written to re-tell the movie while the credits roll.
If amazon included the RZA track "Ode to Django," I would rate this album four stars.
HOWEVER, I just opened up my copy to find that there was no CD inside! Instead, I got two copies of the poster. Obviously a fluke and not intentionally ripping me off, but that is unheard of. The case was still shrink wrapped when received. Will be returning for a REAL copy. If anyone get's two CDs in their case, I'll give you my address...
EDIT: Changed from 1 star to 3 stars. Amazon customer service promptly sent another CD and a return label. As far as the music is concerned, I think you should listen to the Amazon previews (or watch the film) to determine purchasing or not. I don't think someone should purchase music based on a written review of an individual's opinion.

Can any helpful person explain why this is? I imagined I'd been unlucky and just been sent a dud copy, but now I'm wondering if some weird copyright law blocked the inclusion of the track on the album's UK release...
