Our 5 year-old son plays this game with us and we all enjoy it. This game is a great way to teach children the names and locations of the states. It also teaches an interesting fact about each state. In this version of the game, the players don't have to know the names of the state capitals, but since that information is provided on the game board my son is picking up on it too.
There is a 60 second timer so you can help level the playing field by varying the amount of time older players have to read the card and give the answer. We give our son 45 seconds and my husband and I get 15 seconds. We all finish well ahead of the timer, but we find it easier to use the main intervals marked on the timer. You could use different intervals if you desired.
Durability: We buy a lot of board games and this one has held up better than the others. The cards are thick so they are not easily bent. Also each set of cards has a zip bag so they stay stacked and sorted when you put them away.

My kids love this game! It's easy to play & it teaches them simple facts about each state in the union. My complaint is the timer broke the moment we opened the game & the game company was not willing to replace it without a receipt (the item was a gift). Also, I think it would have been more beneficial to include a few more facts about each state on the game card pieces.

The game is actually helping my 5 year old granddaughter with reading as well as learning about the states. Every child who plays the game with her wants one, too! I can't say enough good things, just hurry up and buy it. Your kids will be ever grateful.

Our family loves to travel the United States. I picked up this game to give my five year old son a visual aid in learning where we have been and where we plan on going. It has helped him on many level of learning. Just a great game for great kids.

This is a great board game. It teaches the states' names, shapes and a fun fact about each state. The players, depending on what card they pick, have to find a state that starts with a certain letter, find the state that matches the shape, or find a picture of something on a state. My 5 and 3 year old girls love it. They ask to play it all the time. The only negative thing is that since they cannot read well yet, I have to be present while they play. I guess that is not totally a bad thing since I probably need a geography lesson myself!! This is very educational and will definitely help my kids get a head start in geography. (Also, the state capitals are written on each state.)

I purchased this game after hearing about the Great States game. My kids were too young for that at the time, so I bought this one. My then 5 year old son loved this game. When we first got it he wanted to play it day after day. He's now 8, and he knows all the states really well. He only needs to glance at a shape card for a second before being able to identify it - all of them! Just by playing he's memorized all the fact cards and he breezes through the name cards without any problem either. At 8 years old, it's now gotten a little too easy for him, but he's really learned a lot from it. We now have Great States, and I hope our experience with that is as successful as Great States Jr. Great game! I would definitely recommend it!

I bought this for my 4 and 6 year old niece and nephew about a month ago. they enjoy the game if we suggest playing it but don't ask to play it. (They prefer Monopoly Junior-4 year old and The Allowance Game-6 year old).

They do get excited when their state (Michigan) is one of the answers and they do like finding ones they have visited.

Like another reviewer stated, the color matching of the state shapes and their colors on the board doesn't make it much of a challenge, after the 2nd round the 6 year old had already picked up on this and was coaching the 4 year old to look for a "blue state". We set the time no more that 30 seconds for both kids and they have been able to get all questions, except for naming multiple states that start with a particular letter, within that time frame.

I was disappointed that the timer broke after the first game and because it was such a highlight for the kids , the fun factor is gone.

This is a great game to learn about the states! I think my son who is 6, soon to be 7, is getting more out of it, than my 10 year old daughter, but it's still good refresher information for her too! We have fun playing it as a family!
