By dint of a mispronounced spell, Cugel the Clever finds himself once again unceremoniously dumped by a winged demon onto the bleak far northern shores of the Sea of Cutz — the location of a fierce battle aeons past between the archmagician Simbilis and the hordes of the subworlds league. Vowing to exact comprehensive revenge from Iucounu, the Laughing Magician, Cugel sets forth on the long journey back to Almery.

Expecting potent magical gifts in recompense, Cugel swears fealty to Mumber Sull, the exiled Thane of Icthyll. Under the guttering blood-red sun, the two set off across the lands of the Dying Earth to obtain the aid of the legendary Simbilis. They must face cannibals, sorcery, demons, and all the other deadly and sinister creatures that populate the Earth in its final days...

In this — his first published novel — World Fantasy Award winner Michael Shea recounts the further adventures of Cugel the Clever with the permission of Jack Vance, author of The Eyes of the Overworld. Shea subsequently wrote his seminal Nifft the Lean stories, which are foreshadowed, in many ways, in the present work. Dan Temianka, author of The Jack Vance Lexicon, provides an introduction for this new edition, which sheds light upon Shea, Vance, and Temianka’s lifelong friendship with Michael Shea.

On the Paladins of Vance label, Spatterlight publishes original works by authors who have given their own imagination free rein in the many wonderful worlds of the Grandmaster of fantasy & sci-fi.

I really enjoyed the two Vance Cugel novels and eagerly anticipated this authorized entry into the same saga: It isn't. There is a character named Cugel but he is not Vance's Cugel: he is not witty or that rogue. I enjoyed it but I was disappointed: this is a novel with a character called Cugel but this is NOT the same. I guess my expectations and desire to have more Cugel were too high. I found the selections in Songs from the Dying Earth tribute collection portrayals of Cugel much more satisfying.

In short: THERE IS NO CUGEL WITHOUT VANCE!

It isn't quite Vance but not bad at all -
Cudgel is my favorite character ever and it was great to see his adventures continue - I can't imagine a Vance fan not liking this book

A very good sequel to Vance's Eyes of the Overworld. Shea was a talented writer, and this is one of my favorite books that he wrote.

Almost ten years before Jack Vance decided to write a sequel to  The Eyes of the Overworld , an ambitious young writer sought and received permission to publish his own Cugel adventure. Like Vance's later book, it picks up right where the first novel left off, although it proceeds in a very different direction. This is not the equal of either The Eyes of the Overworld or  Cugel's Saga: Tales of the Dying Earth, Book 3 , but those books set a very high bar indeed, and Simbilis does a remarkable job of at least coming close.

Shea faithfully capture's Vance's style, at least as much as any mortal can. This story was a good addition to the Cugel saga; I keep it on the shelf next to all the rest of my Vance.

This book is an excellent addition to the dying earth franchise. Wonders leap from every page. Fantastic characters interact with this strange world with each other. You don’t know where the story is going until you get there.

There is quite a dark turn in this novel which is in the spirit of Jack Vance’s black comedy but the writer can’t help himself taking it much further. For a novel he reeled off in double quick time it’s very entertaining but it’s not Jack Vance.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good tale. And Cugel survives, although he doesn't deserve to.

A good tale by a master of fantasy. Although Cugel the Clever is a main character, and his selfish and devious character is just as evident it does not really continue his saga so much as place him in another even more fantastic world, more akin to the hells and underworlds of the Nifft stories I like his style.
