Some find themselves debating between standard cutters like this versus ergonomic cutters ... especially, it seems, the Martelli. Having tried them both, I find I prefer a standard cutter handle. While ergo handles have some value, I find that value to be overstated. What the makers of the ergo cutters don't tell you is that the sighting isn't quite as good. A standard cutter handle sights and functions like an extension of your hand. An ergo cutter does not.
Try this: pick up a straight cutter like the Olfa and point it at something quickly in instinctive fashion. If, after pointing, you sight down your arm and hand, then along the cutter, you'll find it pointing right where you looked. No different than pointing your finger. It's easy and natural. Now try that with something like the Martelli. The line along your arm and hand will point where you aimed, but the cutter will be pointing along a parallel path.
Much of what the manufacturers of the ergo cutters tell you is true. They can be easier on your wrists. They have somewhat better leverage. They are easier to use if you need turn and swivel your wrists to follow complex lines. These differences can make or break the decision on which to buy, depending on your priorities. For me, the sighting ease and the fact that the Olfa can be used left or right handed made my decision. I like it a lot.
Scissors and shears were hard to use and required too much manual effort and dexterity. Razor blades were too dangerous. Box cutters were too imprecise and hard to use with big pieces of cardboard.
The Olfa Rotary Cutter, used with an appropriate cutting mat, was an excellent solution.
Just lay the stock flat on a cutting mat, and make quick, smooth straight line cuts. Most of the time, a single pass with a medium amount of pressure will produce a sharp, smooth cut. If the cut doesn't go all the way through, no problem. Just run the cutter a second time through the same slit.
My daughter also used the cutter for cutting fabric for sewing projects. She loved it.
A simple, useful tool. If you have a scissors and use it for more than just cutting twine on packages, you should probably also have a rotary cutter.
P.S. Get yerself one o' them thar overpriced (but invaluable) "self healing" cutting pads.

This tool works well, but the side that dislodges the wheel knife is easy to push by mistake and the wheel then drops on the floor. Read morePublished 2 months ago by pixie
