"A book of tiny gems. Debbie Young's attention to detail brings the extraordinary out of the everyday." - Calum Kerr, Founder of National Flash Fiction Day
Selected as an Editor's Choice in The Bookseller magazine by Caroline Sanderson
From the Author
I wrote these stories to celebrate the art of flash fiction, savouring the tiny canvas of the very short story, capturing a life-changing moment for the key character(s) of each story.
I think short story collections bound together by a particular theme provide a more enjoyable experience for the reader, so I have carefully curated these in order of critical events in a single lifetime, starting with the birth of a baby, progressing through childhood and adolescence, and all the stages of adulthood until death - and just after.
Some of the stories are pure fun, others are more serious or at least have darker undercurrents to the humour, but I hope that together they provide a thought-provoking and uplifting experience, and that they encourage the reader not to neglect or undervalue those little moments in life that can be so important, no matter how brief.
Those times when you can't get too engrossed in what you're reading, yet still want quality entertainment? Flash fiction, good flash fiction, is the answer. I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review, and it was a delight to read and will be staying permanently on my Kindle for re-reading - the stories are layered and delicately detailed, varied and engaging. I gulped them down first time round and I'm already looking forward to re-reading.
My absolute favorite flash fiction features a variety of top authors but Debbie Young's stories would find a place in those without question. The advantage of one author is that you do know the quality you meet in the preview will hold true for the whole collection, and it does.
I very, very rarely give 5 stars but I hesitated between 4 and 5 for a while because I so enjoyed these. If Amazon had 4.5 stars, Quick Change would be 4.5 stars.
This is a lovely collection of flash fiction stories that vary in length but cover various observations or aspects of life from birth to death. Some will raise a smile while others are more poignant and touching and there is something here for everyone.
My favourites were Peep Behind the Curtain, The Mutton and the Lamb, Clean Linen, Penny for Them and The Art of Medicine, but this is the short list and I could go on!!
Well written and flowing stories I believe everyone will find at least one that they can relate to from an incident in their own life and these make for great reading for moments when you don’t have much time.
This little book is a wonderful example of the new trend in ultra-short stories or ‘Flash Fiction’. If you value quality writing but have a busy life and can rarely set aside time to read for long periods, then Quick Change is perfect.
The twenty or so stories in the collection are really varied. Some are funny, some are poignant, many have a twist in the tail; but they are all beautifully written. I’m keen to read more flash fiction by this wise and witty author.
