Great program in general...

I have used QuickBooks for my various businesses for several decades and have been quite satisfied. I just upgraded from Pro 2014 because I like to stay a bit more current with such products, but I did not notice much difference. As a product, QB is perfect for most small businesses. I didn't encounter any of the issues mentioned in other reviews. I downloaded the software from Amazon (the best price) and everything installed smoothly. All the bank interfaces seem to work as before and all the data transferred correctly. The upgrade didn't change much about the look and feel or the way I use QB. When I took the tour of "what's new", I didn't find much substance for the "new stuff". With all the talent they must have, you would think they could come up with something significant and useful (perhaps a total re-vamp of the UI). I hope Intuit can find a way to make the next upgrade really worthwhile. As an accounting program, I give it five stars. However, I knocked one off of the rating because I really don't see any significant difference between the 2014 and 2017 versions....After a few years, one would think something of significant substance could be thought of to make it worth the payment to update!

Great Product Becoming More And More Intrusive

I have been a QuickBooks user for way over a decade. I enjoy the fact that, despite extremely limited business accounting knowledge, I have been able to maintain my two companies quite effortlessly and with a great deal of precision. My accountant easily uses my Quickbooks data and merely adds a couple transactions to complete the entries for my tax years. I have enjoyed the independence from what is now known as "the cloud" and continue my attempts in avoiding the transfer of my information over to companies such as Intuit who don't hesitate to feel like they need to bombard me with "targeted" marketing ads based on what they now know about my companies and their obligation to find ways to make more money off of their customers. With that said, I miss the days of being able to do payroll entries without paying for an annual "subscription" to avoid having the figures zeroed out every month that require me to manually enter every deduction on every payroll check. Intuit will tell you they do this so you won't make errors in your payroll calculations. Sorry - I'm not buying it (literally). I think most people can see through that marketing ploy. I miss having a desktop Quickbooks screen without an ever-present section of the screen dedicated to telling me how I can sign up for more services with Intuit that I "need". I also don't appreciate having to see pop-ups explaining why I need to pay more to do something that I am missing. Each new version of software provides a cleaner interface. I just wish they wouldn't feel obligated to draw me into their quest for more money per customer.
I recently purchased Pro 2017 from Amazon because older versions of QuickBooks have serious problems working with Windows 10. Unfortunately, Amazon reversed the Product Number and the License Number that was emailed to me and provided to Intuit. As a result, although I was able to figure out the error in the email, Intuit did not receive the correct registration information. This resulted in about three hours of my time attempting to correct the error and using Intuit phone support to correct the mistake.

QuickBooks Pro from Earlier Version

I have used Quickbooks for many years and believe it is a very good product. I was able to download and install the 2017 Pro version no problem from Amazon. Once I got the program installed on Windows 10 Professional I was able to open my 2009 Quickbooks data and convert it to the new version without a problem. I checked out the data and memorized reports and everything looked good. I then tried to export transactions from the Intuit Online Payroll that I subscribe to into Quickbooks Pro 2017 and had no problems. (I was prompted to download a newer version of a Quickbooks export/import program which I did without any issues). The export/import updates about a dozen liability and expense accounts as well as a few other accounts. This worked perfectly.

I was forced to update my password to a stronger password which I wasn't thrilled about. The new password must be at least 7 bytes with at least 1 upper case character and 1 numeric character. No special character was required. The program gave a message that the password should be changed every 90 days. I don't know if that means they will force the change.

One problem I had was that when I elected to "Activate Quickbooks" I had to fill out an online page with a lot of information like name, address, company name, company address, email addresses, phone numbers, marketing questions etc. Many fields are mandatory. I typed it all in and hit submit and got "Session Timed Out". I almost screamed, then went through activate again this time more quickly and I got a message that Activation was successful. I may have reduced the time from 10 minutes to 5 minutes. I have to believe the timeout was a fluke.

In my opinion Quickbooks makes the job of accounting for a small company somewhat easy. The interface changes for me are an improvement over my older version. Overall I rate this program very high.
