Forrest Pritchard, in his book Gaining Ground, mentioned The Quiet Crisis. Udall's book helps to reset the mind's mental clock in ways that, as soil savers, we know we are honoring a legacy with our meager actions. If you liked Gaining Ground, Udall's book is a bedrock of environmental history from the 1700's to July 1963, just before Kennedy was killed. It can still be found on the bookseller resale sites.

From back A powerful call to conscience America has in its natural resources an almost unlimited wealth of esthetic and economic riches. The key word is "almost"--for with the appaling industrial fouling of air, water, and land, the wanton destruction of beauty, and the ever-increasing encroachment on open space, we stand at a point of acute, if quiet, crisis. In this book, the former Scretary of the Interior tells the tremendously important and often deeply moving story of those who have fought tirelessly against this destruction, and suggests ways to combat and overcome the destructive tendencies still operative in our society.

How customer reviews and ratings work
Customer Reviews, including Product Star Ratings help customers to learn more about the product and decide whether it is the right product for them.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 19, 2018Stewart Udall's writings about the environmental issues hit the nail on the head as others have reviewed. But this paperback leave something to be desired as some of the pages have photos that are not clear or hard to view plus the binding cuts off some of the reading. I also ordered the hard back to give as a gift that should be a better buy. The writings gets 5 stars the reprint version gets 4.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 8, 2015Udall was way ahead of his time. This is a classic.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 21, 2022Disappointed in condition of book. Had really old (orange in color) and non removable tape on corners on front and back and on inside and someone’s signature and date written on inside.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 1, 2018Excellent book about the long term development of climate change especially in light of US history and policy

Stewart Udall's magnum opus, "the Quiet Crisis," is in essence a brief environmental history of the United States. The book, Udall's first of many, discusses the destruction of the American Earth. But it also puts great emphasis on the evolution of conservation. "The Quiet Crisis" is entertaining, poetic, and informative.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 19, 2010Format: Mass Market PaperbackVerified PurchaseThe book had a number of hand written notes, which really is not a big deal. My main problem was that I ordered the book on Saturday and paid extra for a quick delivery. It took the book 11 days to arrive. I wanted to use the book in a presentation, but it arrived after the fact. Usually my orders from Amazon arrive in a few days without paying a special charge.
