These are difficult IEMs to get right. It took months and tip experimentation but, if they fit your ears, when dialed in they work magic. My Klipsch Custom 2 or HiFi Man Re-0 for example don't come close. Even the Etymotic ER-4s are just in the running.

Position and tip fit are critical. Properly worn the IEM's body is almost straight vertical with the round end down and tip angled slightly forward into the ear canal, cables over the ear. When I wear them they're almost completely hidden viewed from straight on. As with all IEMs, experiment around a constant sound source like a fridge or fan until you maximize the attenuation of external sounds. At their best, isolation judged against foam earplugs seems to be in the ~25 dB range.
The supplied tips are junk. The only tip that properly seals in my ear are Sony hybrids. PROPERLY WORN, while not bloated 'bass head' phones by any definition, sine waves are clean, solid and even to below 30 Hz. Bass is wonderfully detailed and balanced on naturally recorded musical instruments, lacking only the deepest registers on effects like thunder or fireworks. That spectacular detail continues up throughout the frequency range. In my ear tones suggest a mild emphasis around 3 kHz. Highs are clean and extended. Those expecting the 'warm' AM radio balance of some comparably priced units, for example the Klipsch Custom 2, won't take a shine to the AT. I've used the ATH to set up radio stations and studios, it's simply leagues more accurate.

The cable is soft and very low in microphonics. In my ear the snug fit is all-night comfortable. I gave up on my ATH-CK9s and they sat around unused for months until new tips purchased for different phones prompted yet another listen. Glad I did. For the price these are a stone steel, my fave out of nearly a dozen IEMs, and likely to thrill anyone willing to put the time into achieving its spectacularly natural and detailed potential.

This is a wonderful earphone for a pop fans which only cost no more than $120. The only one bad is earmuffs can't make it tightly in your ears.
