Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Following up on the Words Are Categorical series' original book on the subject, Hairy, Scary, Ordinary: What Is an Adjective? (2000), Cleary offers more examples of the descriptive words in this upbeat, energetically illustrated book. Beginning with a straightforward definition of the word adjective, Cleary takes off with a series of imaginative examples presented in rhythmic, rhyming verses. Adjectives in the text appear in various colors, making them easy to identify. Colorful, comical, cartoon-style illustrations help create the madcap quality that distinguishes the series. Phelan, Carolyn --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

I'm a second grade teacher and I have all of Brian Cleary's books. They are wonderful. They help students get a better understanding of the parts of speech by giving them real world examples in a fun way. My students love the silly pictures and the rhyming words. I'm usually asked to read these books again and again.

What can I say that I haven't said before. Brian Cleary is a genius. We first bought these books for entertainment and have been reading them to our children since they were 3 or 4. I've leant them to a friend who has a 4th grader and she said that her daughter finally understood what an adjective is after reading them. I've used them with my students (English as a Second Language students) and they helped them understand the difference between a noun and a verb, a Synonym and a Homophone. I am now using them in my homeschool. They are fun, they are educational and they present the subject in a way that kids really understand. We have every book he has written and add to our collection as often as he writes them.

If your kids are struggling with the parts of speech do them a favor and get them some Brian Cleary books.
