For a shooter, the controls are quirky, too - most FPS developers have seemed to come to an agreement on a standardized control set for Playstation shooters, and I guess the nod goes to Call Of Duty for establishing this layout. F.E.A.R. went it's own way - the controls work fine, but crouching, aiming down sights, throwing grenades, are all laid out differently than what you are probably used to.
I can live with the crappy graphics and the unique control layout, but the main thing I hate about this game is your character's walking mechanic. Someone else here said it's like your character is walking around in shoes that are too big for him. True that, and there's an annoying 'click-clak' sound that accompanies this walk, like your character is wearing oversized tap shoes at that. Yikes.
What I DO like though are the level designs and the gunfights - they got that part down! Still pretty fun, even in 2019. They also got the atmosphere right if you like jump scares (though one last gripe - I wish there was a subtitle option).
Since this game is so well regarded, it's always possible that a remastered version may come out, and I'd definitely pick it up.
So while I wouldn't pay more than around $10 for this, if you have a PS3 and like shooters, it's worth checking out. :)
Most of the game consists of running through corridors and shooting the same enemies over and over again. It felt like I was testing level designs rather than playing out a narrative. There is one particularly long section inside of a skyscraper that was maddeningly repetitive.
I enjoyed the story line towards the end. Before that, it feels like the game didn't even use its own narrative. There were answering machines that were supposed to give answers, but since the sound effects and music were so loud (even if you adjust the sound levels) it was often impossible to hear them.
The graphics, frankly, are not good. I understand that graphics aren't everything, but these just added to the game feeling incomplete.
This game had a lot of potential, and I look forward to playing the sequels, but the whole thing just feels rushed. I don't know much about the game's development, but I feel like they may have run out of time or money to really polish this game. Still, it's worth a play through if you get a cheap copy, and I have a feeling it might be important to fully enjoy the sequel.
