"Un-dead police officers?" Really? C'mon! This PG-13 action-fest once again had me scanning my mental Thesaurus... Absurd? Ludicrous? Preposterous? Ridiculous? Outrageous? Goofy? Hilarious? I think you get the picture. If you've seen the ads you know a recently slain cop joins a team of undead police officers in the Rest In Peace Department.

This goofy comedy, written by Phil Hay/Matt Manfridi ("Clash of the Titans") and directed by Robert Schwentke ("Red") is a sure-fire winner, full of action, comedy and Computer Generated Imaging. I freely admit that there were times things got too, too silly and my interest faltered, but then the story rallied again.

We watch:
* Jeff Bridges ("Hearts of the West") is Roy, wearing a Buffalo Bill beard and mumbling like he has a lower lip full of chewing tobacco; he's an old-time lawman on the third sixty-year extension of his assignment.
* Marisa Miller (Victoria's Secret model) in her slinky gold dress, is Roy's avatar when he walks among us.
* Ryan Reynolds ("Chaos Theory") is Nick, slain by his trusted partner and stunned by this new turn of events. He quickly adjusts to the idea that he can't be killed any more, at least THAT is a relief!
* James Hong ("Safe") is Nick's avatar.
* Mary Louise Parker ("Red") is Proctor, the R.I.P.D. orientation officer in her short black uniform and white knee-length go-go boots...she made me think of Diana Rigg.
* Kevin Bacon ("Frost/Nixon") is Officer Hayes, ready and willing to comfort his partner's widow.

The CGI technicians had a blast and the audience saw blowie uppie stuff galore! Our poor heroes are really up against big-time trouble: Global Warming, the Black Plague and bad cell-phone reception. At least Amazon will tell us when the DVD is available.

It Had So Much Potential

I don't outright hate this film (I did give it 3 stars after all.) But it could have been so, so much more. My first complaint is that Ryan Reynolds's character is bland at best. I didn't even hear any real emotion from him when he arrived at RIPD and was told all about the organization, his proposed role in it, and the benefits he could expect from joining up (I mean, the man literally just died...you'd think he'd need a little time to get used to everything. Sure, there was some emotion at the funeral, but that was forced at best and dealt with with way too quickly.) While this film employed a lot of the stereotypes of buddy cop films, its premise is interesting and the stereotypes that are employed mostly work...Lord knows I've seen plenty of films that did much worse in this area. I do think things with our leads' new partnership were rushed in the beginning. I get that, real or dead, new officers in a department aren't given days of orientation and instead "learn on the job", especially if they already have some police experience in their backgrounds...that is what senior partners are meant for. But our buddy cops went from agreeing to be partners to trying to aclamate to one another to totally dissagreeing with one another to coming to terms and starting to work together on the plot's main case in the space of about fifteen or sixteen minutes...I know the movie's not in real time, but couldn't a little more of its ninety or so minutes have been devoted to developing this relationship? A single episode of Law and Order where a new partner was introduced spent more time on things like that. Some of the jokes just fell flat ("Eternal Affairs" for example (also did they refer to it as "internal affairs" when Jeff Bridges character was first introduced?).) Also, some things were hastily explained at the last minute as though the script writers just suddenly realized that the plot wouldn't make any sense otherwise (the Saint Christopher medal for example) and some things are mentioned once and then never explained at all ("blood of thyn enemy" for example.) And what was with the guys' "catch phrase, "Relax, body"...does anyone see that catching on? Again, this could have been a much better film if everyone had just put in as much effort as Jeff Bridges and Mary-Louise Parker, the only enjoyable and truly memorable parts of this picture. I'm led to understand that this film was based on a comic series. Well, we've all seen the hits and misses of comic book adaptations. If you're a fan and you want this film to complete some kind of collection, go for it. If you're a fan and you want to preserve what you love about the comics and not watch the film, that's fine too. Maybe you're not a fan at all...I'll leave the purchasing decision in your hands no matter what. Enjoy.
