Editorial Reviews

Over a decade deep in the rap game, Mike has released critically hailed records and won a Grammy for best Rap Collaboration with Outkast for the song "The Whole World." But, in no uncertain terms, Mike will tell you that R.A.P. Music is his finest accomplishment to date. He'll even call it a "classic." Of course, every rapper calls every one of their albums a classic. The only difference is that Mike's right.

1988-age 12. I'm sitting in the passenger's seat of a red convertible. the high school kid driving the car puts on N.W.A.'s Straight Outta Compton. My world will never be the same.

1993: Driving through Times Square in a white jeep with the top down, Enter the Wu-Tang goes in the tape deck. Again things change.

FFWD to 2012-Killer Mike's R.A.P. Music hearkens back to the music that came out of the Bronx and scared the $#&% out of your parents. Forget Kanye and his disco lights and his fashion shows and full length films, this is Boyz in the Hood, Menace 2 Society, Ice Cube, RUN DMC, Geto Boys, and Public Enemy.

Intelligent and driven, this is a complete album with enough moods to satisfy most people, from the wistful "Anywhere But Here" and "Willie Burke Sherwood", to the war drums of "Don't Die" and "Big Beast", to the introspective micro/macro reverie of "Reagan", to the soaring and spiritual title track. If you want to hear Kanye and Jay Z singing about how they're better than you over a catchy beat, buy "Watch The Throne". If you want a love song to hip hop, buy this.

If you are buying the Audio CD version from Amazon to take advantage of the AutoRip thing they're advertising, DO NOT DO THAT THING. The CD and associated AutoRip are the CLEAN version, even though you can't tell that here. And you will NOT be able to just change it out for the explicit version. Because this happened to me. And it sucked.

Killer Mike hooks up with Brooklyns own El-P to make R.A.P. Music (which stands for Rebellious African People Music) according to Killer Mike. I'm going to tell you right now if your looking for swag rap, tight clothes and bright colorful shirts this album is not for you. This is real music now that watered down stuff, the closest thing to a club song on here is "Big Beast" which goes hard and features TI, Bun B, & Trouble. Killer Mike gets political on this album and throws shots at Obama, Bush, Clinton, Reagan as well the Government. He says a lot things on here what other rappers are afraid to say, on "JoJo's Chillin" Mike tells a funny story, showing his storytelling abilities, then on the song "Reagon" and "Don't Die" he goes off even more, pulling no punches sorta like a 90s Ice Cube. It's about time somebody stood up for Hop Hop and went against the grain, show rebellion and Killer Mike did that. El-P did a great job on the production and Mike kills it with his raps. A dope project worth checking out. This album wont get mainstream attention because its too real, its raw Hip Hop !

I've followed Killer Mike since his debut with the Dungeon Family, and supported his awards for it and his work after. The song "The whole World" was a national phenomenon. He has managed to dig out a firm base in the underground, with very solid follow up albums. This time he went with an East Coast producer, former Company Flow member, creator and owner of Def Jux records out of Brooklyn, and very active hip hopper El-P. Easily the best business decision Killer Mike has made. El-P not only has a very grounded idea of Hip Hop production, he does it so out side of the box so as not to be able to escape the signature. R.A.P Music is not only an incredible accomplishment for both artists...but is easily the best album Killer Mike has put out to date...and may well cement his place in Hip Hop history.

The album reminds me of a throw back to Public Enemy. There is almost none of that corny mess about how many guns, jewels, cars, and hoes. And as usual with Killer Mike there's all kinds of social commentary.

This album can be broken down into four points, one negative and three positive.

1. (-) Killer Mike isn't the most talented lyricist you'll ever listen to, despite him trying to tell you otherwise (he's still good, though)

2. (+) El-P's production is top-notch (as always), yet not over-stated enough to take away from the verses; it's a perfect compliment

3. (+) Killer Mike's lyrical content is on-point and more powerful than most artists bring to the table these days

4. (+) It's a contender for 2013 album of the year, so buy it.

Killer album by Killer Mike. He's even running for congress in the great state of GA! If you hate that pop lame radio crap, if you dig real rap music and hip hop, if you're down with Outkast, peep this album.

If you would’ve told me years ago that Outkast affiliate Killer Mike and Def Jux founder El-P would be collaborating I wouldn’t believe you, but if you told me the result would be one of the best Hip Hop albums of its year I’d just flat out be confused. Who would’ve thought that El-P’s dystopian replicant steez and Mike’s down south bombast would work so well together? His Public Enemy-esque drawl sounds great over El’s insanely bass-heavy synth production and their synergy has created something more cohesive and spontaneous than El Producto’s own Cancer 4 Cure which was also released the same year. While other rappers are merely co-opting the South's style Killer Mike proves that nothing is better than the real thing - a conscious rapper who can still claim to be trill. If flying cars finally get made and the future holds a hovering ’63 Impala replica with a trunk filled with nothing but 12 inch subs then you can expect to find this album in everyone’s stereo/cyborg holographic music sound projector.
