We did our research after we our purchase and found it is a lot easier to sand down the bowl with sand paper. This takes a little time and is harder than it seems, your arms get weak and patience wears thin but it's worth it!
Once sanded down and not as rough, we began grinding the bowl with rice to help smooth it out some more. After that was complete it was on to seasoning, grinding a mixture of garlic cloves, salt and cumin seeds.
We had read about baking the bowl for about 30 minutes, which we haven't done yet. Also, you should never wash the bowl with soap. We simply rinse it out with water and a sponge then let it dry. Others say to clean it with a mixture of salt and water.

Keep it away from soaps and chemicals! The stone will absorb it, making your molcajete unsuitable and possibly unsafe for use. All you need is a good stream/spray of water to clean it, and store it for future use. I am looking forward to enjoying my molcajete.
I have issues finding traditional Mexican goods in my super white state so I bought this because the price was acceptable and it met my needs.
Anyway, this gives off a lot of grit and is NOT pre-seasoned, which means if you buy this you will have to season it yourself. Note that even if you season yourself, it will STILL GIVE OFF GRIT occasionally.
-Molcajete was chipped upon arrival.
-Booklet that comes with it was full of holes and looked beaten to hell.
-Did not come pre-seasoned.
-Has a weird coating on it that rubs off on my hands. No, this is not because of the rock itself, it feels chemical.
Overall, I would try looking into the Mexican grocer websites online instead.
