Editorial Reviews

Digitally remastered two-fer from the AOR rockers featuring their first two albums for Epic Records on one CD. These albums date from 1971 and 1972 respectively and show the band at their hard rockin' best just a few years before they became staples on FM radio. BGO.

I have been an REO fan since 1969. I sat on the floor of The Red Lion dozens of times and watched and listened in amazement at the music that was being produced (does anyone remember the incredible version of Sympathy For The Devil that they played as an encore? Everyone was standing on top of every table/chair/bar to groove to the music).

These CDs in one word are EXCELLENT. The original REO album has poor sound qualities including poor bass and an overall thin and flat sound. The Re-Master is excellent and I can finally turn it up and the sound is full, clear, not distorted and has definition. The Re-Master of REO/TWO is also excellent. I have been hoping for years that someonoe would take on this project and I give a big Thank You to whoever invested in it.

That is because, in my opinion which will not be well received, these two albums and the Live album consist of all the REO music that ever needed to be recorded. If you ever heard them play live in the late 60's and early 70's you know what I mean. Their live energy and bonding with the audience in a small venue was unbelievable. As they got bigger and bigger, the music suffered. Their best music was written as a group by Luttrell/Richrath/Doughty/Philbin. I still prefer the songs they performed back then including Young Girl On The Mountainside, their 15 minute version of Lay Me Down with a 10 minute instrumental jam in the middle inclduing Luttrell on the flute, and Dead At Last where, after the organ solo at the end, Richrath would slide his guitar on the mike stand. Watching Richrath live was something I always looked forward to and I can say it is my fondest Rock N Roll memory. He was truly unbelievable.

bada.. double platter from the r.e.o boys hailing from illinois. mainly sounds like early seventies boogie rock and it's a far cry from their "i can't fight this feeling" days. so if you are lookin for some radio friendly 80s ballads, keep lookin, cos they're not here on this set. if you like early seventies boogie rock a la stones, crazy horse, and the black crowes, you ought to get this and erase those "i can't fight this feeling" preconceived notions of this band called reo speedwagon. gary richrath's playing is on fire on this release, so be on the listen for him and his axe. here's track by track

Disc: 1
1. Gypsy Woman's Passion-album opens up like gangbusters with this strong blues inflected boogie. alan's drums are way up in the mix on this and terry luttrell's vocals are gritty as ever.
2. 157 Riverside Avenue-ditto here. this is an awesome track
3. Anti-Establishment Man-love this track. it's definitely a cool period piece, referencing how unneccessary vietnam was and how we need help with other stuff here in the u.s.
4. Lay Me Down- pretty good song
5. Sophisticated Lady- cool little duke ellington cover
6. Five Men Were Killed Today-reo sounds a lot like crosby stills and nash on this track
7. Prison Women -interesting track "That's the object of the story.Don't mess with the prison women"lol
8. Dead at Last -this is an extended jam showcasing neil doughty's keyboard dexterity
Disc: 2
1. Let Me Ride
2. How the Story Goes
3. Little Queenie
4. Being Kind (Can Hurt Someone Sometimes) -foreshadows the kevin cronin balladry that would come later except this rocks out a lot more and i wouldn't categorize this with the aor cheese that would come later.
5. Music Man -decent cronin penned track
6.

Finally, a record company decided to issue Reo's first release on CD. Reo Speedwagon and REO TWO are some of the best music that this band has recorded and the digital remastering only enhances an already great sound. The liner notes are a good addition as well. May Gary Richrath live on. Get it while you can!!!

I just received this dual CD from Amazon. I was very impressed right away with the packaging and liner notes of the CDs. The cover art all appears to be close, if not, identical to the original vinyl LPs I have. They kind of mixed/matched using both throughout the CD case. The liner notes were written in June 2007 and actually have a few tidbits of information I had not read over the last 30 years. They have some quotes from Terry L. and discuss some of the band's turmoil from a perspective other than Kevin C's. Obviously the sound quality is the essential question. I did not have either release on CD, only vinyl, so it is leaps and bounds above what I am used to. The first "album" has been near imposible to ever get on CD. So, this combination is a great package for the price.

My first concert ever was Joe Walsh with opening act REO Speedwagon in 1974. I had been a fan of REO for a couple years before that concert. I have seen them many times since then and still listen to their music to this day. REO II is one of my favorite all time rock albums and I have owned it on CD for many years now. I have searched the internet high and low looking for their first album but never have been able to find it on cd. Until now that is. The release of this 2 album/cd is long overdue. Even though I have owned REO II for sometime, I still purchased this cd since it is the only way I know of to get that rare REO debut album in cd format. All the songs are there and it sounded great on my home and car systems. I highly recommend this double cd combo pack since in my opinion REO II is the best REO album ever and as a bonus you get the rare first album on cd. WIN,WIN BABY!
