Captain Talis just wants to keep her airship crew from starving, and maybe scrape up enough cash for some badly needed repairs. When an anonymous client offers a small fortune to root through a pile of atmospheric wreckage, it seems like an easy payday. The job yields an ancient ring, a forbidden secret, and a host of deadly enemies.
Now on the run from cultists with powerful allies, Talis needs to unload the ring as quickly as possible. Her desperate search for a buyer and the fallout from her discovery leads to a planetary battle between a secret society, alien forces, and even the gods themselves.
Talis and her crew have just one desperate chance to make things right before their potential big score destroys them all.
Peridot is headed for its second cataclysm. War has broken ancient alliances, sealed borders, and locked down the skies. The Five, Peridot’s alchemist gods, have seen one of their number die and another fall in their efforts to protect their world from invaders beyond the stars. Defeated and diminished, they have ceased to answer the prayers of their people and have left the rapidly unraveling world to fend for itself.
Talis and the orphaned crew of the lost airship Wind Sabre have a plan to set things to rights, but they’re stranded on a rock far from the heart of the conflict. When an old enemy comes and offers them a ship and a path forward, it comes with strings that will pull them further from the home they are so desperate to save.
Can Talis and her crew chart a course through hostile skies, shifting allegiances, and subverted governments before the true enemies of Peridot claim a power that can destroy the world once and for all?
This description and this book contain spoilers for the author's Peridot Shift series. It is recommended that you read FLOTSAM and SALVAGE first!
A gothic horror set in the world of Peridot, Mary Shelley’s influence permeates this magic-infused tale of hubris, horror, and obsession.
Following the events of Peridot Shift Book Two, SALVAGE, a Yu’Nyun gas released on the trade winds is tearing people’s souls from them, leaving their bodies violent, anguished husks. Ada’s brother, Elias, is one of many of the foul winds’ victims.
Launching a desperate plan to bring him back, Ada hires a bounty hunter to procure an empty body for her brother’s preserved quintessence. If Ada can re-bond Elias’s soul to this new body, they can help the other citizens of Peridot who were similarly devastated.
But when the bounty hunter brings her a mermaid, one of Onaya Bone’s soulless experiments, Ada’s plan for redemption spirals into a hellish nightmare. The flesh-eating mermaid may not have a soul, but she won’t allow Elias to have her body without a fight.
Ehli never expected much from her life. She’s an Iscillian, designed in a lab to serve as custodian for a Xendari merchant crew, with no future beyond the warranty of their starship. When she reads two previously overlooked lines in the ship’s operations manual that cast doubt on everything she thought she knew about her existence, the satisfaction she once found in her simple life dissolves into an unsettling obsession with learning the truth.
She is expected to report for duty, complete her assignments, and rest until her next shift. To put the needs of the ship and crew before her own. She knows better than to expect the oh-so-vertebrate Xendari to help her find the answers she craves, but every step she takes investigating her origins – and that of all Iscillian serving as bioaccessories across the galaxy – takes her further from the life she knew, and deeper into danger.
But she can’t ignore what she’s learned. She must know what secrets have been kept from her, and she’s willing to risk everything to uncover them.
A critical failure of the Landor’s gate drive has left Ehli stranded in dimspace. Her only companion is BEETL—a drone programmed to terminate any Iscillian who endangers the ship. Ehli definitely qualifies. She caused a gate drive failure when she was driven to distraction by the personal pursuit of a tantalizing clue to her origins.
Locked between the layers of reality, Ehli must find a way to repair the gate drive and rescue herself and her ship. But once she does, can she continue seeking her homeworld, or will BEETL’s deadly protocols activate the moment she fails to set course for an impound outpost? And even if not, how can a lone Iscillian navigate a galaxy when the spacefaring population sees her only as an extension of a ship without a legal crew?
Things are complicated further when Ehli inadvertently involves another Iscillian in her trouble. No longer playing just with her own life, Ehli must solve both the moral and technical disasters before her divergent behavior causes the death of another crew.
