Tired of your canoes and kayaks taking up all your free space in the garage? Turn to the Rad Sportz kayak/canoe lift hoist, which stores your boat overhead and out of the way. The hoist is equipped with a smooth pulley, latch, and hook system, which let you easily lift products as heavy as 100 pounds. Just attach the pulleys to a ceiling joist, secure the boat with the straps and hooks, and lift. The exclusive rope locking mechanism will keep your kayak or canoe safely suspended above the ground, so you needn't worry about accidentally dropping the boat in mid-lift. Plus, the hooks are rubber coated to protect your gear from scratches and scuffs. Designed for ceilings up to 12 feet tall, the hoist also works with items like bicycles, ladders, and cargo boxes.

The Rad-Sportz Kayak Hoist system is a very nice system to store a kayak on the ceiling. After using my self designed system for about a year, I needed an upgrade because of a new boat. This system caught my eye because it is effective, and also inexpensive compared to many on the market right now. Raising the boats (I have two boats and two hoists) is easy and secure due to the locking mechanism. Lowering it is a bit more difficult, because you have hold one of the two lines (to release that locking mechanism) while you feed out rope on the other. My boats are heavy and this can hurt your hands, depending on how you are holding the lines.

My only other nit-pick is the rope is not the best quality, This rope seems to fray easily and will probably need to be replaced after a year or so. But for the cost, this device is well worth it and I would buy another if I got another boat.

The previous comments bout not pulling the boat up far enough are no longer true, in that they have redesigned the system with adjust able straps so you can get the boat pretty tight to the ceiling. I'm 6 foot tall and my ceiling is just over 8 feet and I can walk under my boats.

DO NOT trust the buckles that go around your boat. After install, I was lifting the boat but it got a little uneven on front/back balance, so as I tried to adjust one of the buckles broke followed quickly by the second, dropping my kayak 3 feet to the ground! Luckily the non-rudder end hit first so no damage. I removed the broken plastic buckles and used only the stitched-in loops on the straps to wrap around my kayak (I moved one mount out further so it was around a skinnier part of the yak). That was the only problem; the rest of the system works just fine. I was lucky to have a high ceiling in my garage to clear the garage door AND my SUV. But you can see in the photo how much it can snug up to the ceiling when you remove those plastic buckles.

Read all the reviews on this rig both good and bad and finished install today. As stated by most everyone, the instructions leave much to be desired. The straps have been improved and are now adjustable, a big help. I substituted 50" of 5/16" braided nylon and poly rope ($12 at HD)for the cheap rope in the kit. The instructions say use two ropes but you are better using the 50' without cuting. I used lag screws with washers to attach the brackets to a 2 X 6 10 then threaded the rope through the pullies before tying each off. I chose a lariat knot (picture at commonknots.com) puting the bolt through the hole. In using one rope, start the treading process in reverse with the single pulley inserting the knot then working backwards. Then worked the other end through on the double pulley. I may be helpful to place the 2 x 6 across two step ladders to try the lift with a 2 x 4 as dead weight to make sure the rope is threaded correctly. Much easier that correcting once it is up. It should work with ease and hold when the safety is engaged. I was able to pull the finshed rig on the board by using a rope to the joists in my 12' ceiling then nailed the board to cross joists with a framing gun and cement coated nails. It is going nowhere. The instructions will work if you think it through a few times and practice with the system before puting it up.
I will buy another for my other boat. I hope this has been helpful

I compared a few units for hoisting my kayaks to the ceiling of my garage. I found that the hardware in this kit was the same in kits that were selling for a lot more from other online retailers. The installation is not terribly difficult.

You do need to shorten the straps that hold up your kayak if you want to hang it close to the ceiling. The straps are pretty long and if you don't fold them over or shorten them, your kayak will droop pretty low.

Very pleased with the quality of the hardware that came with the kit. The instructions were fairly easy to interpret and the whole thing went together in about an hour.
The photo accompanying this product is a bit deceiving since it will not permit the kayak to go as close to the ceiling as shown due to the size of the pully systems and the width of the straps that come with the kit. If the straps could be shortened (they come sewn to a fixed size) you could gain several more inches. As such, our kayak is hanging only about 5.5' off the floor. It's OK, but even knowing it's there doesn't stop you from banging your head every so often.
Good kit for the price. Certainly does the job.

With a 4/5 star rating and 264 (265 now) customer reviews I figured this would be a great buy. I read the reviews prior to buying but figured the good reviews out-weighed the bad reviews.

The Good: It came as advertised and was shipped promptly. The package read that it supports 125lbs (25lbs more than advertised.) The instructions are not as bad as some of the reviews state so either they have gotten much better or people don't know how to read. It was only $25...

The Bad: As other reviews have stated, the rope is pretty cheap and will need to be replaced. I have just used the hoist once so far and the rope is shredding like crazy. I found one just like it at Wal-Mart for $24 in the kayak section (plus no shipping costs.)

The Ugly: The plastic snaps used to hold the kayak on are not strong enough to support the advertised weight. I had just finished rigging the hoist and attached it to my kayak (which weighs 68lbs) and lifted it about 4 feet off the ground and one of the cheap plastic pieces broke sending my kayak to the hard concrete below. Luckily my kayak is fine but I wasn't expecting the piece to break when my kayak is well below the supposed 125lb supported weight (even below the 100lb weigh limit advertised.) I have attached pictures of the broken plastic piece that sent my kayak to the floor for your viewing pleasure. I have since replaced the "belts with the cheap plastic snaps" with some ratchet tie downs that I had in the truck. They seem to do the trick perfectly. The kayak doesn't sit too high off the ground but it is high enough to fit our small Mercedes c-class under it just fine.
