I'm considering buying two more for my two holding tanks as the valve allows me to connect them down low for parallel overflow, as well as for hose irrigation purposes. Flexible hose is more plastic-forgiving than rigid PVC.
Update 1.21.18: I docked one star. One leaks after all. I like the overall design, but I'll switch to the straight 7/8" version in the future as it leaks right at the bushing fitting. And yes, I followed directions to the letter (see original review). I'll keep it because it's a slow seap on a rain barrel, but I'm disappointed. I'll try snugging it down a bit more, but I did so adequately the first time. I also docked another star because shipping was almost 10 days; that's slow by even so-called "free standard shipping" standards in the continental US. Don't deliver an item on the very last possible day and expect someone to be overly impressed with the customer service. Sorry.
From there on its very straight forward. Make sure you keep the gasket on the inside. Note that the nut turns counter clockwise!
Use teflon tape on the tread on the valve part to ensure a good seal and tight fit.
I snugged the main nut, put the spout on tight, then loosened the main nut, orientated the spout, then tightened everything.
It was really nice to have quality product the assembled easily.
I used a 1" Forstner bit on a test board and screwed it directly into the wood to the end of the threads . I poured water on the back side of the hole while the spigot was facing straight down and did not leak on the second attachment (the first try to tighten it went in sideways and it leaked a bit). Photos of this are included. I did not use silicone tape on the threads for the test.
CONCLUSION: The addition of silicone tape will work to keep a strong seal even without the bulkhead when screwed directly into the wood of a wooden barrel by using a 1" drill bit to make the hole.
I hope this is useful for other folks wondering if / how it works when not using the bulkhead fitting.
