Out of the box the top is very nicely packaged. I think some of the other reviewers received returned tops. Mine appeared to be untouched but the box was a little beat up. The top fabric and all the windows come in a very nice storage bag. It has slots separated by soft fabric for each window. The top also includes a tool bag and a tonnau cover for the top while folded down. The top hardware was secured in the box and packed quite well.
Installation was pretty easy. Having installed similar tops on my YJ for over 20 years helps. If you're new to it, just take your time.
The top fabric is pretty thick. Once I had the entire soft top frame up and in position, I put the fabric on. Warm day with sun. Cheaper tops (like this one) are a little sensitive at pull points. Again, take your time and don't force it too hard. At first, the top had a hard time getting on the frame correctly. I let it sit on for a bit and added some tension here and there to the spreader bars to eventually get the top in place. Windows went in easily. The zippers aren't the best, so be careful with them (Bestop or OEM are quite better). Windows are tinted all around.
It rained right away after I got the top on. It did leak. The fabric above the driver and passenger seats is a little saggy and water collected there. So after a few hours, the water seeped through the fabric. I use a Skid Row top prop for my bikini top, so I just installed that and the ponding stopped.
A piece of my hardware was broken when arrived. Shipping damage. I called Rampage (Lund) and they shipped the part right away.
Reason for 4 stars is the lower end zippers and the leak through fabric. I was on the fence with just buying replacement skin for my OEM top with half doors, but I decided to give this top a shot. I mostly ride all summer without doors anyway and I have the full fabric doors in addition to the half and full doors.
"It's cheap, buy a Best Top etc." Yes, it is a cheap top. It is the base model top for Rampage, there aren't many frills in this model. For the price, it isn't bad, considering similar tops cost as much or more.
"The instructions suck." Well, yeah, the instructions were a little hard to follow. But it took about 3 hours on a good sunny day to put it together. Some of the hardware is not of the best quality. Again, base model top here. I ordered this in August of 2017, it's June 2018. Some of the hardware is rusting, so I may have to replace it with stainless steel, but a few reviews mentioned that. Some of the hardware was crooked, or bent, nothing a little tweak couldn't fix. I will advise this. When you get the top, go over all the hardware with a fine tooth comb. There was one part broken, while not critical, I wish I had taken care of it before I even installed the top.
"The hardware is cheap" Well yes, again, entry level top here. Today, some of the hardware has broken, and I need to figure out a replacement option. I contacted Rampage, and their advice was to buy another hardware kit. But they are being more than generous with another problem with the top, a zipper problem, and I'll mention that later.
Okay, the first important thing, don't mess with this top unless it is warm outside, including installing it. I left it draped over a fence on a sunny warm day for a few hours to let it loosen up. I have a 1991 Wrangler, and ordered the hardware kit for a complete install, converting from a hardtop, with full steel doors. I got the black denim and it looks nice. The material is thick, the seams are well stitched, and almost a year down the road, through a New Jersey winter with heavy snowfall, it is doing very well. I recommend everyone who gets any soft top, gets the kit to maintain the fabric, the vinyl windows, and the zippers.......ESPECIALLY the zippers! I had a point, after the winter, where I did not open the rear window for a long spell. The first nice spring day, I went to role the back window up, no problem. Got home, went to roll it down, the zipper on the passenger side went down, and completely off the tracks. The metal stops at the end of the zipper were missing, and it was a nightmare. With the tension on the top, the rest of the zipper came apart. After a few hours of struggling, I managed to get it back together...very tedious, very frustrating. I have contacted Rampage about this, since it was still under warranty, and they are taking care of it, sending me a replacement rear window. I would advise everyone who gets a soft top, take care of it, don't let snow build up on it, I didn't. Get the kit to lubricate the zippers. I didn't. And exercise the zippers often, I think that is one of the problems, it sat all winter not being used.
All that being said. This is a great top for the money. It looks good on the Jeep, it's a little difficult to 'drop', and I had to get a few small bungee cords to manage the frame supports from flying around or sticking out. Think old school convertible top. Most days I just roll up the back window. If I'm really liking the weather, I take out the side windows as well. I had a hardtop and I took every opportunity to get that thing off, but with the back window up, the side windows out, the top adds a nice bit of shade, and I realize how many tops I have been baking under the sun at a stop light.
Bottom Line: It's a good top, but a basic top, no frills. The hardware leaves a lot to be desired, if you can and are able, take the hardware to your local hardware store and buy stainless steel versions, so you can avoid rusting. Get the kit to wash off the top, and add the protectant. Bird droppings really can do a number on the fabric. Get the kit to treat and lubricate the zippers, I think that will help. And definitely get the kit to clean and maintain the vinyl windows. I see too many tops, where the windows are cloudy or brittle. Also, there are aftermarkets products, a tube that mounts across the back of the Jeep to hold your windows rolled up, look into that, it is a good idea for storage trust me. And last, the instructions are not the best, I watched a few videos beforehand. But the best advice I can give you, let the top warm up in the sun before you put it on. Take your time, read and re-read the steps before you install it. If you're not sure, try calling Rampage and see if they can help. Being under the hot sun definitely shortened my patience, but I figure it out, and if a caveman like me can, I'm sure you can as well.
There are other tops out there, of course, more money. I plan on upgrading, and getting a nicer top, but for now, this one works fine and suits my needs. A soft top, with windows that zip out, and I can unhook and lay back when I want to. If you're looking for that easy convertible feel, I would suggest the Sunrider top from Best Top. It has a panel that goes over the front seats, that unhooks with two latches at the top of the windshield, and the whole thing folds back.
Rear tailgate bar would not fit with the tonneau cover piece on bar. Had to cut the piece off to make fit. Not a huge deal, but not well designed for a YJ.
Hardware went on fairly well with the exception of the aforementioned rail guide issue.
As mentioned in other reviews, no way to install the cloth top unless in temperatures above 70+ degrees. Absolutely important taking your time and not forcing anything. Not able to complete until replacement parts arrive, but should fit tightly.
I have read reviews of the Best Top models, and seems the biggest complaint was the top is too loose. I would rather have a tight fitting top than one that is loose, but again, takes time and warm weather to stretch top to fit.
Overall, nice top for the money, we will see how the rest of the installation goes once part arrives and temperature cooperates.
