I do a lot of testing of various batteries and this one has proven to be at the top of the list, but i will break out the details first.
Finish: It has a slick white acrylic finish. It looks very nice, but it’s not my favorite kind of finish for practical use. These finishes can become slick/slippery, but on the other end they tend to avoid or at least high scratches better than matte finishes.
Ports: The battery sports 2 USB output ports rated at 1A and 2A (2.1A). In the newer batteries they are releasing them with 2 ports both rated for 2.4A and the battery puts out what is needed. The setup on this battery is good, and while the separate ports shows its age a bit, it still performs very nicely. It will charge all of your devices well. On the input side it is only rated at 1A where newer devices are now using 2A inputs. This just means you can expect this battery to take well over a half a day to charge (roughly 14-16 hours).
Indicator Lights: The battery does come with 4 nice indicator lights showing the % of battery charge, details match the description. The indicator stays off while the pack is charging a device which generally a good thing as it means no power is used for the LEDs and no extra heat is being generated.
Auto-on: This battery does not feature Auto-on charging. This is a feature common on many similar batteries where it automatically starts to charge the device as soon as the USB port is plugged into the battery. On this battery you have to press a button to start the charge.Read more ›
I will update the review when I get the new unit which may take awhile since I live outside the US and things take a while to get here.
I opened the dead unit and discovered a small circuit board for charging, voltage conversion and % charge display.
Inside I found 5 Samsung ICR18650-28A (2800mah cell reviewed here:http://lygte-info.dk/review/batteries2012/Samsung%20ICR18650-28A%202800mAh%20%28Purple%29%20UK.html) Li-Ion batteries which are a high quality cell suited very well to this application. Measured capacity is ~2630 mah X5 in this application.
The fault lies in Samsung, not in RAVPower, as these batteries are rated at a total of 14,000 mah but deliver ~13,150 mah.
Since no one markets these products taking into account the conversion losses of 15-35% all ratings are approximate anyway.
5 batteries are $29.75 at Fasttech, which has good prices on batteries, so the price for this pack is quite good.
I purchased this unit Feb 25,2014 and started using it in late March.
This unit is beautifully designed physically and the controls and displays are excellent.
It's obvious they went to some effort in this devices design.
When I received it I thought, wow, what a great power bank, which it is in many respects.
It's honestly rated, and a very good value if the cables were any good.
Even with the charging problem it's still a good value.
The 14000 mah in the batteries provides ~10,000 mah out @1A which is about 70% efficiency which is as good or better than most power banks.
Real-world capacity is always significantly lower than the advertised capacity.Read more ›
Prior to this we purchased several packs like this from different brands, all were defective and simply did not work.
The flashlight feature is an added bonus for emergencies. At full charge I imagine this pack could keep that little LED on a long time.
— CHARGING DEVICES —
There are two available USB ports, one charges at 1A for phones, and one that charges 2.4A for tablets. You can connect Lightning, mini-USB, micro-USBs, and most other charging cables to this. You plug in your devices to this, and hit the circle button at the top to start charging. If there is nothing connected and you press that same button, you will see how much power is stored (four lights indicate a rough estimate of 25% per light; so two lights is 50% charged, three lights is 75% charged, etc.)
— CHARGING THE BATTERY —
Once your battery runs out, you have to charge the battery itself. There is micro-USB input on the same side as the outputs. Use a tablet charger to charge it faster. It takes about 5-6 hours to fully charge. This also holds its charge well. I left this in a drawer for a few months and when I needed it for a last minute event it was still at a 75% charge.
— FLASHLIGHT —
I still don't understand why people put flashlights on these things, I guess because they can? If you want to use the flashlight function, press the circle button twice to turn it on, and twice again to turn it off. It's a one-LED light so it's useful when you a portable light.
— WEIGHT —
This battery has some weight to it, so I mainly take this out on longer trips or if I'll be without electricity for a few days, as I don't want to carry that weight around. It's not super heavy, but I like to pack light, so for most times I have a smaller and lighter battery.
— ACCESSORIES —
I appreciate all the accessories that come with this.Read more ›
