Our blue MyCharge is actually about 6 months old. And in that time, it has rapidly gone down to 50 per cent capacity. The second myCharge (white one) needs to be charged via USB on your computer or laptop. That is a real pain! Finally, the larger one that I bought at Walgreens was the best of the lot but it was aggravating to have to carry along a USB cable. Thus, I vowed to buy a portable battery charger that didn't suck! I took my time this time and read tons of articles and did my research. The RAVPower portable battery charger consistently received high marks. As soon as I received it, I was impressed by its heftiness. I love the fact that it can plug into the wall to charge and that you do not need a separate USB cable to charge the phone. My minor complaint is that I wish the built in cable was a tad longer so that you could lay your phone directly on top of the charger. It is hard to hold both of them in the same hand. You would have to place them on a flat surface to charge comfortable. However, there is a separate USB port so that you can use a longer cord.
I couldn't be more pleased with how this battery pack performed during my marathon. About an hour into the race, my iPhone battery quickly ran through all of its internal battery. It was such a relief to be able to attach this battery pack and continue listening to music, as well as send text messages to friends updating them where I was. It took me about 5.5 hours to complete the race, and with this battery pack, I was never without power to my iPhone.
The battery pack is a little smaller than the size of an iPhone 6, but it is maybe twice as thick. It isn't super light, but isn't prohibitively heavy either. It is a little heavier than an iPhone 6. I used one of the main side pockets in my running jacket to hold this battery pack, which took up the entire pocket, but I was able to carry the other items I needed on me (ID, cash, credit card, energy gels) in my other main side pocket.
One great feature about this battery pack that most others don't offer is that it has a small lightening cord build into its side, so you can attach your iPhone directly to it without having to carry a cord. It also offers a plug to plug directly into the wall to recharge, which is key for me as I wanted an all-in-one battery pack.
The price of this battery pack may seem more expensive than others, but the unique built in lightening cord, plus the build in wall plug, and the great power capacity, totally justifies the price. If you need a battery pack that is completely reliable and will power your device for several hours, or even a day or two, this is a great investment.
I went through about 6 or 7 of these devices, made by myCharge, RavPower, NewTrent, Antec.....you name it. Their tech teams know me well....sales reps don't really understand the concept of current bypass vs pass-through, which is kinda key.
This 9000 mAh unit has traveled the globe with me for over four years, from flight cabins, to even the Black Rock Desert (anyone get this reference?), and this is still is my go-to. With flip-out wall prongs, built-in micro-USB & separate USB-A slot, I've tested both both pushing 5V/2A simultaneously......even though the specs on the device itself states 1A from the USB-A, and 2.4A from the built in micro-USB.
Walked through Best Buy today, and saw a myCharge with a built-in USB-C cable....and thought to re-visit the market space, and, heck if $39.99 has the rest still beat.
