WEIGHT & DIMENSIONS - It weighs slightly more than an iPhone 6 (4.8 oz vs 4.55 oz). Also, if you click on any color except the black one, you’ll see incorrect dimensions of 5.2 x 3.2 x 1.5 inches. That’s the size of the shipping box, not the charger which is 3.5 x 1.6 x 0.9 inches.
LED CHARGING INDICATOR LIGHTS - I had 3 LEDs left after the first charge, but only 1 LED after the second charge despite having what turned out to be about 31% of charging power left, so the lights may not be precise in telling you what you have left.
INDICATION THAT THE BATTERY PACK IS ALMOST DEPLETED - Somewhere between 5 to 10 minutes before the battery reached full discharge of the last 2% or so, one blinking LED light came on by itself and stayed blinking until the charger died. So if you see that blinking light go on by itself and stay on, it’s your warning that you are almost at full discharge and it’s probably a good idea to unplug then, as I don’t believe it’s good for the charger to be fully discharged too much.
CHARGING TIME FOR THE RAVPower 6700 mAH - It took just under 4 hours to recharge this battery pack from a full discharge to 100% using the provided USB cable and a RAV wall charger I also purchased. Not sure if this is good or not, but perfectly acceptable to me.
BACKGROUND (more technical - feel free to skip if not of interest).
After a friend gave me a 2200 mAh capacity charger he had laying around, I didn’t initially understand enough about these to know why it would only give my iPhone 6 with an 1810 mAh capacity a partial charge of 60% or so. So I started researching for one that (a) had a small form factor I could fit in my pocket, and (b) enough juice to actually charge my battery twice if needed while traveling without having to look for an outlet.
Once I started researching, I learned that what you can actually get out of ALL brands of these type lithium batteries is always significantly lower than the listed raw power. So what should we expect? Finding this explanation from a RAV employee responding reviews helped.
"The voltage of the battery cells is 3.7V, however, the output voltage of the power bank is 5V. You must allow wastage when the voltage increases. And in the market, the average efficient of the power bank is about 75%.
So the actual capacity of the power bank should be:
Labeled capacity *3.7V /5V * Efficient = 6700*3.7/5*75% =3718mAh”
If I understand this correctly, with a charger with 3.7V output with 5V input, you should subtract about 26% (3.7/5 =74%) off the top. In addition, RAV is saying that the industry standard for efficiency of that remaining capacity is 75%, so subtracting another 25% from the remaining power will give you a rough estimate of how much total juice to expect.
So for this 6700 mAh battery, 6700 x 74% - 25% = 3718, which would charge and iPhone 6 with 1810 capacity just over twice. I found other sites that said you should expect to lose 10 to 15%, so RAV’s 25% estimated loss seemed high and I decided to do the charging experiment you see above.
I topped off the charger completely full, then ran my phone battery down to exactly 20% for 3 days in a row using the RAV charger to charge it back up each day. Assuming I’d use approximately 1448 mAh each of the first 2 days to fully charge the phone from 20% to 100% (1810 x 80% = 1448), at the end of 2 days, I should have had another 822 left of the 3718 to take the phone up another 45% from 20% to 65%.
BUT . . . . it was a pleasant surprise that the phone charged all the way up from 20% to 92% on the 3rd day, which equates to about 1303 mAh. That would mean I got about 4200 mAh of “juice” out of the charger over the 3 days, which equates to slightly more than 2.3 full phone charges (1810 x 2.3 = 4163), which is exactly what RAV’s literature states.
As you can see from my charging results above, it took much longer to charge the last 10% or so, but this is expected behavior as your phone gets closer to full charge. I’ve read that chargers deliver the largest output when your phone has no more than a 20% charge and the smallest output after reaching 80%-90% when the charger has to work harder pushing the last percentage in, causing wasted energy, and that you can possibly get more charging juice with less waste if you stop charging the phone between 80% - 90%. If I’d done that, I may have gotten even more than 4200 mAh out of it. There are also other factors that may cause more or less efficiency, such as the length and quality of charging cord, so this is not an exact science and nobody can tell you exactly what YOU will get.
In sum, I’m VERY happy with this charger and look forward to getting some good use out of it on an upcoming trip. I can get almost 3 charges from 20%, it small and light, looks great, and the included pouch holds both the charger and my 3 foot iPhone lightning cable making it easy to slip into my pocket. I don’t think you can do much better for the price.
This little battery pack packs a punch considering its small portable size. You can keep this in your bag/purse and take it anywhere with you. I read recently that some airports are limiting the size/capacity of the power banks you can take on a plane. You will have no such issues with this product. It has just the right capacity to get you up to two full charges, depending on your device. As with all the newer RAVPower products, this battery pack comes with iSmart technology. This means it charges your device faster, and dynamically provides your device with the maximum power it needs (up to 2.4A).
The design is compact and simplistic with the input, output, indicator and button to the front of the battery pack. The battery pack also comes with a 4 led battery level indication system. Though the manual does not say, each means:
----4 LEDs indicates that the battery level is between 75%-100%
---3 LEDs indicates that the battery level is between 50%-75%
--2 LEDs indicates that the battery level is between 25%-50%
-1 LED indicates that the battery level is less than 25%
It is nice to see the product come in frustration-free/eco-friendly packaging. I highly recommend getting the silver/aluminum style, especially if you have any Mac/Apple products.
So, I bought the RAVPower portable charger and after using it for a couple of weeks, I'm quite impressed. The reason I went with this unit was because of its compact size AND the capacity that it holds. I wanted one that could handle both my wife's and my phone, if the situation ever arose. So far, so good!
It comes with a USB to mini-USB cord that's just long enough for you to use to charge your device, but not long enough to be too bulky. I like that it comes with a pouch, which is a nice touch. It'll hold both the charger and the cord. The same cord will re-charger the unit. It warns that it can get warm while charging your device, or recharging itself. I've found that the amount of heat coming off of it as "barely there". My phone gets hotter during a recharge.
