That aside, this was a worthwhile read. To understand how the Benedictine monks lived, and to perhaps find wisdom for living ones own life. One doesn't need to be a monk to require advice on how to deal with other humans in a manner pleasing to God. This book offers excellent assistance in that area: worth reading and worth buying.
RB1980 is inexpensive and pocket-sized. It's slim enough to read in one sitting, yet neatly broken into Benedict's short chapters, with simple explanatory titles, for ease of reference. It's in vernacular English rather than church-speak. Editor Timothy Fry, OSB, gives a friendly, helpful introduction to the religious context of the early 1980s, when this translation was made.
The one and only flaw is a lack of content notes. As Fry admits, parts of the Rule are no longer observed. Hey, I'm a Protestant from the provinces. Tell me which parts, please, and why. And some of the repeated terms, like "made satisfaction," may have been self-explanatory at Monte Cassino, but are somewhat hermetic nowadays. Notes would be really useful.
But barring that single flaw, this translation is just what we need as part of our reading if we're interested in modern Benedictine spirituality. Ranging from spiritual topics like the value of obedience and humility, to practical concerns like the allocation of household responsibilities, this pamphlet of the Rule gets a star place in my library of devout classics.
