Small, easily fits in front jeans pocket, full day battery life (14+ hours), and wasn't worried about it being lost, broken, or stolen. Needed a phone for frequent international travel and didn't want to pay the highly expensive Verizon roaming rates or risk loosing the more expensive primary US phone. Reviewed several carrier and sim card options and went with T-Mobile for the first trip because it gave me a local US phone number that was activated before the trip with unlimited data roaming (data speed was 2G while in Europe) and texts in Europe and other countries, calls were 20 cents a minute. With Facebook and text messaging calls weren't necessary (only made two very short calls). I would have kept this phone and T-Mobile plan activated for myself, if Google Fi hadn't of came out with a better offer two days after I activated the T-Mobile account. Next trip I will buy a cheap sim card in-country (10 euro for 10 days) for the time that we are there and use it in this phone for a second travel phone.
Pros & Cons:
The phone comes with screen protector installed, headset, and micro-USB charger - big plus to use the same USB cable as other devices. Added 16GB microSDHC Flash Card. WiFi range was good and easy to set up. The camera is adequate for Facebook and other online social media; it will not impress anyone or replace your pocket camera. Screen is hard to read in direct sunlight, fine in low light, clouds, or inside. As mentioned the max data speed is 3G, 2G when international roaming was due to the T-Mobile plan - buy a sim in country for 3G service. I found that 2G was adequate for most needs (updating locations with Google Maps & downloading webpages), posting camera photos to FB was a little slow, adding photos when sending text messages could take an hour. Internal memory is limited, (2GB) be sure to install downloaded applications to the sim card when possible. Used an external battery pack twice at the end of very long days (16+ hours) when we we uploading the day's photos while having late dinner.
Overall great little phone, loved the small size and long battery life.
But truth be known, my real reason for buying this is to work along with the Star Trek communicator I also purchased that requires bluetooth to function realistically.
Now, I have watched friends use and listened to them talk about their phones, and read many reviews before purchasing this RCA M1 phone, and I honestly don't know what people expect from these things. I'm still in the process of setting this up, and may eventually go to YouTube to learn how to get the most from this phone. But what I can say at least for right now is that:
1. It sounds better than any flip-phone I've ever owned.
2. Signal strength seems constant in my region.
3. Screen is easy to view even in sunlight.
4. Battery life seems to be very good.
5. Texts good enough with my "fat" fingers.
6. Takes photos at least as good as my Nikon D-200 SLR camera.
7. It "paired up" nicely with my Star Trek communicator.
Eventually I may get around to setting this up in order to do Google, Facebook, retrieve emails, help me find a nice restaurant, or get directions to Chicopee, Massachusetts. But for right now, it does everything I need it to do, and more....for under $60 bucks no less!
So this phone seemed like a perfect fit - it had the bare necessities and wasn't too expensive. These phones suck so badly, that I am actually typing this review during our vacation in the Dominican Republic. I also waited until alcohol and hangover had left me this morning so that I could better utilize diction and punctuation and get the point out to all the others, these phones are garbage. What good is buying a phone with a camera when the phone is "unable to connect to camera." These phones are such garbage the can't even open their own hardware. So, maybe it's a software issue and I should just download another camera app from the play store (you think just like me; pretty clever). Nope, these wonders of modern technology still couldn't find the camera. It isn't just the camera application either. The touch screen isn't very responsive and the other other apps continuously freeze or don't work either.
