Once I saw that 16 gauge was what was needed for my surround bar, I started my search on Amazon, since the reviews here have rarely led me astray, and the pricing's always near-impossible to beat. I read the reviews for this product, and they are what sold me on this bundle of speaker wire, as opposed to a more pricey one, or wire that arrived coiled on a spool. None of that was necessary, and I figured, at quite a bit less than a twenty note, I really couldn't lose. Glad I risked it, because this speaker wire works beautifully!
Almost all of my TV equipment is glossy black, right down to the SoundBar-Riser Two that I recently added to cradle my surround bar and raise up my TV (the perfect completing piece to my setup). I didn't really think about how the clear casing on this wire would make it stand out a bit more, with almost everything else being black, but I honestly love the color of copper, and you really can't see the wire unless you look for it anyway, so no big worry there. Speaking of the plastic casing on this wire, it's very easy to split with a well-placed snip of the scissors, where you'll want to separate the positive side of the wire from the negative for proper connection to your speaker/s (something else I didn't realize I'd need to do until I figured it out, after reading the description in the product information). It DID take me quite some time to strip the thick plastic casing from the wires to expose the requisite 1/2" for connection to my speakers (I actually cut away about an inch of casing - better too much than too little, I figured, and I could always cut down the exposed wires if necessary), but as all I was using was an old pair of Fiskar scissors, and a few cheapie-cheapie needle nose pliers, I think it all went quite well. I'm sure proper and specific tools would help you get the job done faster, but I just went with what I had on-hand (making SURE that I twisted the exposed wires - it'll make it MUCH easier to get into the speaker's wire openings, and it'll ensure that the sound DOES stay sharp and clear).
Once I had my seven wires prepped and ready to go (and the TWENTY-EIGHT ends exposed and twisted), it was very easy to connect my surround bar to the Onkyo TX-SR508 7.1-Channel Home Theater Receiver (Black) that I'd bought for it. I can honestly say that I've never before enjoyed watching TV or listening to anything attached to it as much as I do now. I cut my wires on the long side - about 7' - but the sound is spectacular, and I can't imagine that I'm losing anything at the current length.
LONG story short, if you're doing it yourself, and not sure what wire to go with, I don't think you could get a better bargain or crisper sound anywhere, for this price or more! Great product! And I have plenty left over for NEXT time! ; )
Heavy gauge speaker wire is more durable, better insulated and will carry a heavier load over longer distances with less signal loss (lower resistance). For most audio installations 16 gauge is fine. I like 14 gauge because I know it will endure the pitfalls of home use such as being nibbled on by the cat and such. The down side is it is not as flexible as 16 gauge speaker wire and that's OK with me.
For those who want to know this wire is easily soldered using regular rosin core electrical solder. Do not use acid core solder or the wire will corrode over time. Instead of buying expensive wire pins to terminate your wire I perform a process known as "tinning". I simply strip 1/2" of insulation from the wire and use a good hot soldering iron and apply solder to each wire end. I then trim the ends to 3/8" length and they are ready to go.
Would I recommend this product? Absolutely. Unless you spent $5000 on a dual mono block tube amp, then this wire should work just fine. KB0QAQ
This 24awg 100ft speaker wire by RCA is made entirely out of CCA and I am kicking myself for not having recognized it sooner. (CCA wire is noticeably lighter than pure copper wire) No where's does it say this in the description. Unless you want to have to eventually undo all of your wires from your projects, I would always order pure copper wire from a reputable company such as Conext Link, the (Old) RCA speaker wires, or wherever you can find it, because it is worth doing something right the first time. = )

I'm glad I opted for the 100-foot as by the time I did my five's, I didn't have much to spare; when you look at a small living room space, you might think 50-foot will do you ... but take in to consideration nice cable running (my receiver is on a shelf above a 55-inch, and about 5-feet up). So don't cheap out and just grab the 100-foot option (worst case you can help out a buddy with your left over).
Make sure you DO YOUR RESEARCH and know that anything OVER 80 feet you should be using 14 gauge ... so count all your back from receiver, down to floor, cross, up, blah, blah, and round UP with each measure (when you move you'll be glad you weren't a penny pincher); more than 200-feet total = 12 gauge.
