I just received this as a birthday gift. I love it! I am now able to carry my favorite book along as well as periodicals in the space of a small hardback. The colors are so sharp and as I love to read while traveling, the backlight makes it so easy. When my eyes are tired, I can change the font size at the touch of a button. The compact flash card makes it easy to upgrade how much you are able to carry with you! I recommend this for anyone who is an avid reader!

I love this thing! It weighs less than a large hardback, I find it easier to hold than some books, and the backlight feature means I can read after dark in the car or after my husband has gone to bed. Not everything I would like to readis available, but there is enough to keep me busy for years and it's not like I expect this gadget to totally replace paper books. They do add titles all the time. The highlight and notes features are easy to use and really useful. I love that I can carry 100 books in the space of one!

First, let's address the issue of content for the REB 1200. Some reviewers mark down the reader because of a perceived lack of content. To my mind, this is akin to saying that a computer is useless because you can't find a specific software package for it. Rate the device on its own points; discuss the content issue separately.

Although it's true that GemStar/RCA stopped making this ebook reader, and it's also true that you can't buy major market content for it from GemStar, Amazon, B&N, or Powell's, it IS NOT TRUE that you can't buy content. Fictionwise sells material ranging from short stories to full-length novels for this device (in the OEB .IMP format), as well as for its cousin, the REB 1100 (AKA Rocket eBook).

Software is also available to convert other electronic formats (including unencrypted .RB, .PDF and .LIT) into .IMP format (visit [...] for information). You can also convert anything in standard HTML into the .IMP format, along with graphics in .JPG or .PNG format. (So you could, say, download an article from Slate or Salon to read on the train.) With the right software, you can even convert a PowerPoint presentation into the .IMP format and display it on the REB 1200. Nice back-up for a presentation to a small group if your laptop or projector fails.

As for the device itself, I think it's great. A large, bright screen that will display color and let you read in the dark; a simple method for moving content (including your own) into the book; the ability to create slideshows of photos to display on it; a removable, rechargable battery (lasts from 3-12 hours, depending on how bright you like your backlighting); Compact Flash memory (it will take up to a 1gb card, which will hold 300+ books); the ability to make 'margin notes' with the included stylus...

I use this gizmo for reading in bed while my wife is asleep (otherwise she gripes at me about the book light and for turning the pages...yeesh), and it's EXACTLY what I want it to be. The design is excellent, the battery life is surprisingly long; if I could improve anything, I suppose I'd make the text a little sharper, but it's fine. The only downside is that not all that much content is available. If you expect to be able to read any book at all on this device, you'll be disappointed. On the other hand, just browsing casually through a couple of categories, I've already found enough reading to last me for a few years. I recommend this highly, but as a supplement to books, not as a replacement for them.

The company may be obsolete but if you can buy this used, I suggest you do. Ebooks are not hard to find if you know your way around the internet. Or if you are familiar with mIRC. Just because the company doesnt make them anymore doesnt mean they wont work. Just get a copy of rocket librarian and you are all set. It really is worth it.

I purchased an REB1200 a few months ago and initially was thrilled. Being able to download and read a book anywhere was fantastic. The backlight is wonderful for night reading. Very compact and easy to use. Trouble using the Librarian CD. Would highly recommend visiting the website and checking out the available books to see if there is an adequate selection in the genre a reader prefers. That was my biggest disappointment, since I am an avid Star Trek reader and only found 34 books available.

I've owned the REB1200 for a year now, and will never go back to paperback, and perhaps not even hardcover books again. The screen is incredibly easy to read, downloading books is fast and easy. I simply can not say enough good about this product. If you like to read, and are tired of carrying around a pile of books, just get this!!
