After doing a lot of research, I decided on this RCBS unit since I am not ready to commit the investment required for a larger unit until I know if a sonic cleaner will do what I want it to (plus I can use the smaller one in the future for small parts if I order a larger one).
My decision to go with this RCBS unit was primarily due to its having a reservoir drain valve on the bottom corner elevating the need (and mess) of having to pout or dump the contents. Also the reviews from other users on this product have all been positive.
My first project was to clean the slide on a .22 pistol which had the firing pin gummed up with lubricant (FrogLube).
Using an industrial (food) grade citrus cleaner (Solvent) that I have, I cleaned the slide for up to 15 minutes with heat. When it was done, there was a sufficient amount of carbon and lubricant floating on the surface but upon test firing the gun, the problem persisted.
Luckily my order of FrogLube Solvent arrived which I then used (mixed with water) and tried the same cleaning settings, this time with perfect results.
Since then, I have tried cleaning numerous other parts including the slide of a 1911, AR bolt/carrier etc. all of which have come out nice and clean only requiring a wipe down to remove any residual carbon or other fouling.
Next will be cleaning some of my suppressor including aluminum sleeves (which I plan to Cerakote soon anyways).
Even thought the outer casing is hard plastic (ABS?), it seems to resist reacting to the solvents I have used so far, but I recommend keeping a few towels and some water handy to clean up spills to prevent any damage.
The inner tub is stainless steel and has the drain in the back corner which seems to well placed and designed for proper drainage. The unit also includes a plastic/vinyl hose to attach to the out port to ease draining. The valve is rather stiff and I hope to becomes a little easier to operate over time.
Other than that, there is not much else to say about the unit other than that the controls are basic and fairly easy to understand.
Hoping that this unit holds up well over time since I usually clean my firearms almost weekly.
My only let down is with parts cleaning. I've ran a few gun parts through it. I also tried cleaning some baffles from a couple of my supressors in it. The results were just ok. Still took some brushing and scraping to clean up everything. This was all on stuff that wasn't filthy to begin with. That said I haven't really played around much with different temperatures or cleaning solutions. In fact the only parts cleaner solution I've tried is the Hornady one. The machine seems to work as intended. So I'm not going to fault the machine cause of a single method I tried with a cleaner from another company didn't wow me.
Bottom line I'd recommend this cleaner. Cleans brass in a fraction of the time then a tumbler with less noise and no dust.
A few things to note:
1. use distilled water / don't throw the container away _ you can use it to empty the water when done.
2. you can use either rcbs or hornady products successfully for around $20-$25 /
or you can use lemi shine ( $3-$5) 1/2 tablespoon for every quart does the trick & 1/2 tablespoon of orig.dawn.
3. don't over fill ( patience is key to getting great results)
4. to save some time, preheat the water on the stove if you plan to use the heating element.
Have a great one & Happy reloading,
