Once again, Cynthia Hickey has written a story that gripped me from the first sentence. As a long time fan of Ms. Hickey's cozy mysteries, I'm delighted to discover this wonderful historical romance.
After her parents are killed, Ruth escapes the murderers by taking her grandmother and younger sisters as far down the White River as they can afford to go. Landing in a town almost entirely populated by men, Ruth opens a restaurant which quickly fills with costomers. She soon discovers, however that it's not only home cooking they're starving for. Thankful for the protection of the handsome town sheriff, she isn't too sure what his motives are either. Besides, she holds a secret that, if exposed, could ruin her and her family's chances for a secure future.
Post civil warm and set on the banks of the White River midst the lovely Ozarks hills of Arkansas, Ruth's Redemption is one of the best books I've read in a long time.

Good story, interesting characters and a reminder, lest we forget, nothing is too heavy to carry with the help of our Lord. That with forgiveness we can shed our burdens into the Lord's hands and lift our hearts to embrace joy again.

This is a good story with a very spunky heroine. Ruth is such a good, well described, stubborn woman. Her sisters and grandma are also well written.
I only gave 4 Stars for some editing issues that detract from the book. There are several spots where the wrong word is used (hi for his) and extra letters added. But the big booboo for me is this : at the start of the book, Ruth returns to the homestead to find it burning and her ma and pa dead. She finds her grandma and sisters were hiding in the root cellar. 70% Through the book she is telling her story to the good sheriff and says she found her sisters in the woods and her grandma missed everything because she was off digging roots.
Another problem is the timeline. It is very unclear throughout the book. One minute seems like the sisters have been in painted bluff for months then only days. At the end of the book i still don't know.
Good book, i would defiantly read more of this authors books.

This book appears to be light reading on the surface. However, within the chapters lie many nuggets of truth. These truths can reinforce accepted values or initiate new ones. The book was a delight and well worth the time. Most enjoyable.

A book with a heroine who absolutely will not give up. She isn't perfect and she fights change as much as she fights for her family. She fights love the most, but love has a way of sneaking up on one. An interesting, intriguing and entertaining read.

First there's despair in losing her parents to such a horrific death. Desolation borne from accidentally killing one of the men who committed this act and took their money. Escape to a new place as far away as possible . But one can never leave the pass behind it always has a way of catching up with you as we've seen in this story. Finally with much struggle, hard work and forgive Ruth experienced the healing balm of God's love.
Apart from a mix up with the names at times also not understanding how Marsha could have disclosed Ruth's whereabouts it was a good read.
