There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
Seeing how many different dash cams are out there I was really undecided which to pick. My decision to go with Rexing S500 was because it has great specs, it looks cool, has great reviews, includes rear view camera, and a 32gb sd card, which I think should come standard with every unit that's out there (big thumbs up, Rexing guys).
Let me start with the packaging. I am going to echo another review and say it was very professional. Every piece of equipment has been individually wrapped, and the foam inside the box protected the main unit, which is great. The unit comes with professionally made user manual. I was really impressed by its content. It explains every feature, how to install the system, all settings, and everything you need to know is there. Aside from the manual, there are two mounts for the front camera (double sided tape on a slide-type mount, or a suction mount), 32gb sd card (!!!), cigarette lighter socket power cable, long micro usb cable to connect front and rear cameras, a short usb cable data cable (to charge the battery and connect the device to a PC to update firmware or extract the media), and a usb adapter for the sd card, which is very nice. It seems Rexing really cares about their customers. They have included everything you need to get going.
After unboxing, I couldn't wait to get it installed. The installation was pretty straightforward and it took me about an hour to get it done the right way, so the most of the cable was stowed and out of sight. I own a Prius, so the installation of the rear view camera was a bit tricky due to the car being a hatchback. I had to run the cable through a tight rubber boot alongside the brake light cable in the back. That was the hardest step. After running the cable, stowing the excess, and bringing the car back to normal, it was simply plug and play. Here comes an advice to Rexing: I think the usb cable connecting both cameras should have right angle connectors on both ends. Also, while the power cable usb connector does have a right angle, it is oriented upside down in my opinion (please take a look at the pics). Either the usb port that gets power should be flipped on the device or the power cable needs to have the usb connector oriented the other way to make the installation cleaner. This is just a cosmetic gripe that can easily be addressed, but it doesn't affect the functionality of this powerful device in any way.
Quick note to newbies: Make sure you insert the sd card the right way (see pic). Some people will try to force a sd card in the slot damaging the slot. Trust me, you don't want to do that.
After getting everything hooked up, I decided to test it out. As you can see from the pics, the picture quality is very good. I love it how you can quickly switch between display modes (Front camera, Rear camera, and yes, it has Picture In Picture mode as well) and turn it off while recording. Another thing I like about it is that I don't have to do anything after turning the car on and off. The camera turns itself on when it gets power and immediately starts recording. You can set a delay timer for shutdown after you turn the car off as well, which is very cool. The device is full of cool features and settings. I haven't tested all of them yet, but the fact that it contains few safety features, such as Fatigue Driving alert, or Lower Beam Reminder is very impressive if you ask me.
I really like this dashcam so far. I hope it will last a long time. Thank you, Rexing, for making quality product!
Pros: Very nice video and picture quality, features, easy of use, long cables give plenty of length to snake it back behind and underneath interior trim, INCLUDED microSD card, easy to read and understand instructions.
Cons: No wire clips included (not necessary for install but makes install cleaner), suction cup mount is a little flimsy (hoping it holds up to Florida potholes and bumps) and the mount makes the camera noticeable on the front windshield if you don't have a sunstrip (tint strip). The main front camera is nice size but a little too bulky if you have a small front windshield like in my case but still mounts nicely, rear camera only adjusts up and down but not side to side like the front camera does, choice of USB port side on back camera should've been flipped around so cables would be hidden cleaner.
Overall I gave this camera 4 stars because I feel like this camera should have came with cable clips and a little more sturdier suction mount but other than those minor things, this camera is awesome!! Thank you Rexing for a great product! I am impressed with my camera for my first Rexing purchase!
I purchased this camera during a lightning sale which was a great deal but I would have bought it at the current price if that deal didn't happen when it did.
Anyway, the camera came packed nicely with everything you would need to stick it to the window and go.
When you get it, open the box and grab the included micro sd reader and the included micro sd card and head to your computer. Format the card and download the firmware update. Unzip the file to the sd card and then put the card in the camera.
Now go out to the car and use the cigarette adapter to power the camera before you mount it. Let it do the update (it will look like nothing is happening but it is so just be patient) when it's done updating the camera will turn on. Go in the settings and set it up, set the date and time, recording options and format the sd card to get rid of the firmware update.
Now if you plan on using the cigarette adapter then all that's left is using the sticky mount or the suction mount and you're good to go.
If you plan to hardwire this camera, well they have you covered there too. You get two panel knives that can be used to pry up dashboard clips or pillar clips etc... it does not include the hardwire kit so you will want to get a mini usb hardwire kit off Amazon as well.
The camera slides easily off the sticky mount and the box contains two so guess what? You can easily move this between two (or even three) vehicles with everything included. Since I have it hardwired in my truck I can use the cigarette adapter and the other sticky mount in my race car and the suction mount in my wife's car.
Really the hardest part of setting this up was wiring it. If you don't plan to hardwire it then it will take you less than five minutes to get it up and running.
The video quality is nice both night and day. At night you will need to get really close to the vehicle in front of you if you want the plate number but overall it's great quality and picks up everything else.
This also comes with a rear or in car camera. If you mount the rear camera to record behind you then you will have some wire routing to do but they do supply you with a long cable that should span any vehicle short of a stretch limo. If you are an Uber driver or Lyft driver you will probably want this second camera to record inside the car. You will most likely want to get a shorter mini usb to mini usb cable and run it off the windshield.
There is an option in the main camera to record split screen front and rear or to record separate files A for front and B for rear. I prefer two files but depending on how much you need the data you will want to get a larger micro sd card to accommodate more video files.
