Review

"The photographs in this collection, heartfelt and heart-wrenching, offer an intimate side of American history by a photographer who, in many ways, is as much an icon as his subjects themselves." --Telegraph

Review

"Two radically different political legends who've had a strong pull on the imaginations of later generations are showcased in RFK: A Photographer's Journal."

The other reviewer is correct..the cover picture is flopped (they use the negative backwards so his part is on the left side of his head instead of the right) this is like a book with Jimi Hendrix playing guitar RIGHT handed! The photographer is Harry Benson...a legend. The book has many great images but sadly ...I viewed the whole thing at my local Barnes & Noble tonight and there are many many more flopped images!! For those who don't think this is a big deal..you are wrong. Flopping an image changes the image and the person... picture a sports image and the numbers backwards..and frankly most people don't have perfectly symmetrical faces and so flopping the image makes things ...surreal and weird. For such an icon as RFK to screw up so many images ..in a Picture book celebrating a great photographer is absolutely unforgivable and ruins the whole thing.

In 2001, Benson published a large coffee-table sized book including photographs which illustrated his 50-year career as a photojournalist. Some of those photographs were taken during his long friendship with Bobby Kennedy. The 40th anniversary of Bobby's assassination would be in 2008. He was approached to produce a book honoring the memory & life of Bobby Kennedy.
Benson went back to his diaries from that time period to refresh his own memories. Instead of mere captions, the text in this book includes quotes from Bobby's speeches, direct selections from Benson's diaries & Benson's thoughts birthed by them.
This book begins with photos taken in 1966, showing an exuberant life-challenging Bobby Kennedy shooting the Snake River rapids with some of his family & friends. Among them were his own children, the Shriver children, John Glenn & mountaineer Jim Whittaker. The lively spirit of this gathering was reflected in these photos. These photos always remind me of how full of life Bobby was & how he surrounded himself with like-minded family & friends. One could not help but grab onto life when anywhere within Bobby's aura.
The remaining photos in this book are split between those taken on the campaign trail after Bobby announced his intention to run for President & those taken after his assassination. The campaign photos illustrate the hope & excitement engendered by Bobby everywhere he went. Benson has chosen the perfect words, either his or Bobby's, to accompany these photos. Benson was objective, but Benson was also a fan. All of these photos reflect Bobby in a positive light. Seeing these photos always makes me so sad to remember the excitement of those days & the thoughts of "what if", which still fill my brain & the brain of so many others, including Benson's.

This book is a great reminder of what artistic photo journalism can be. The book compiles a set of shots that walk the line between a family's intimate moments and a political leader's ascent and death. It is both micro and macro and could only have been made by a talented photographer with deep access and the knack for being in the right place at the right time. And keeping his wits about him when he was in the worst place at the worst time.

This book by famed photographer Harry Benson is a fitting tribute to RFK's legacy, with stunning behind the scenes photographs of RFK and his family on holiday on the River of No Return, during the St. Patrick's Day parade and campaign, as well as before, DURING and after the assassination at the Ambassador Hotel on June 5, 1968. Benson was the last photographer to leave the Amassador Hotel kitchen that night. Although other photographers may have taken photos that evening, none caught the scene or covered this horrific event as extensively as Benson. Have you also seen Benson's books on the Beatles? You should.
