Product Description
The FIBARO RGBW Controller is a universal, Z Wave compatible RGB/RGBW controller. The RGBW Controller uses a PWM output signal, which enables it to control LED, RGB, RGBW strips, halogen lights and fans. Controlled devices may be powered by 12 or 24 VDC. Additionally, the device supports up to four 0V 10V analog sensors such as temperature sensors, humidity sensors, wind sensors, air quality sensors, and light sensors. All IN and OUT terminals may be user configured for LED control or 0V 10V signal readouts.
The RGBW Controller allows you to manage and monitor energy consumption connected to the LED strips. Four channels allow for total or independent measurements of energy consumption. When connected with the Home Center 2 you can check the live realtime power consumption and review usage history.
You can upgrade the device wirelessly using the Home Center 2 any time new firmware is available. You don't have to disconnect it from a wall socket and waste valuable time connecting it to a computer. Just press the update button and enjoy the comfort of your home
WARNING: Fibaro RGBW Controller is dedicated to operate in low voltage circuits of 12VDC or 24VDC. Connecting higher voltage load may result in Fibaro RGBW Controller damage. Fibaro RGBW Controller must be powered by the same voltage as the connected light source. I.e. if controlling 12V LED strip, the module must be connected to 12V power supply. Similarly, if controlling 24V RGBW strip, Fibaro RGBW Controller must be powered by 24V voltage supply.

** Newbie Note: If you are powering a full 15' of LEDs at Full White, you will NEED a 5 Amp power supply. If you tell the LEDs to draw full power (should draw 5 Amp total) while using a lower (3A, 2A, etc ) powersupply, the LED chipset could be permanently damaged and discolor.)
A few MINOR gripes (this should not dissuade you from getting the product, just know what you are in for) on the design.
* Literally ZERO RGB strips are in the order of R, G, and B. I guess they had to pick one layout, and went with the obvious. Aggrevated me that I had to twist cables.
* Carries FOUR (4) useless inputs, wasting FOUR (4) pins. You may put one in an area. You might even put TWO in an area. You will never use all FOUR. Which brings me to my next gripe.
* Only ONE (1) 12V Terminal. So the power TO the Controller is also the power TO the LEDs. I was hoping for a separate out so I can unplug my controller without unscrewing the LEDs at the same time.
YOU NEED TO BUY ADDITIONAL EQUIPMENT IF YOU WANT TO CUSTOMIZE IT!!!
* Another User Claims "Also supports a full set of customizations, such as how long ( / smoothly) you want your color fades from one color to the next to be. Phenomenal!" -- This requires you to buy the Fibaro Home Center 2 (A $300 purchase) if you want to change the delay on fades or make ANY customization to how the device works.
If you want to "hook up and go", that's not for you.
Previously I had worked with various RGB LED products but I had never heard of RGBW before reading about this product, I bought two 5M rolls to test the functionality of this controller. It took me a little while to figure out how to get my Vera controller to recognize this. The included instructions were specific to using this with the Fibaro Home Center 2, which uses slightly different terminology than my Vera uses. It took about 30 minutes to get working, which isn't too bad since I am still relatively new to working with z-wave.
Fibaro talks about all these crazy applications for this. I haven't even attempted to interface with the 4-channels of (analog) input. Instead I solely control from the Vera, using either the android app on my phone, or through the scenes that I included the device into.
Multi-color control is definitely a novelty, however it is fun to change the color of the lights when friends come over to play music. The real value that I see in this product is its ability to dim 4 separate channels of high-efficiency lighting for under $70. There are 1-channel z-wave dimmers that cost more than this. The ability to control so many channels through one device is very appealing. I will probably purchase a second unit to dedicate to controlling normal (white) lighting in my house. I originally though I would use the first one I purchased for that if multi-color lighting wasn't useful but I don't want to give up my fun lighting. I am tempted to buy a third so I can set up multicolored exterior lights too.
The unit does a nice smooth fade when you turn the lights on or off. This would be really nice to use with a motion sensor. I have some lights that automatically turn on and off, and the audibly click of the relay is a little annoying (but it was helpful when I was first programming it.) The silent, soft on feature would be a welcome change, and the ability to adjust their output would be a welcome upgrade.
When creating multi-level light scenes, you either need a variety of lights on separate controllers that can be toggled on and off with scenes, or you need dimmable lights. With this unit, you get four channels AND dimming, giving you a huge amount of flexibility and adjustability.
This product is very unique from the some of the other z-wave products I have worked with, Most seem to be either stand-alone battery powered devices, simple plug-in units, or switches that need to be hard-wired into the house. This like a hybrid. You need to connect wires, like the hard-wired units, but it is all low-voltage, so you don't need to switch off a breaker when experimenting with it. You can simply disconnect it from the 12-24V power supply which can be as simple as a standard 750 mA wall wart, or specialized high-output power supply which is necessary to power long ribbons of LED's. It doesn't get concealed in a junction box because it isn't running household current, so the unit will need to be concealed somewhere. Mine still lives on my workbench with a spaghetti of wires coming out of it. I haven't come up with a good way to enclose it for a permanent installation. While I love tinkering, it will eventually need a permanent home, especially if I want to use one outside or integrated into my regular interior lighting.
These little units have a huge capacity. The unit reports that one 16.4 ft strip of Supernight RGBW LED's only requires 13 watts, which I am powering with a 2 amp wall adapter. Theoretically the unit should be able to control over ten 5m rolls of that product, or almost thrity 5W LED lamps with the proper 12V-12A power supply. You can double its capacity if you run it at 24 volts.
Just a heads up, soldering those RGBW strips is challenging. I read reviews saying that it was impossible. For some, perhaps, however with a fine-point soldering iron and some good soldering skills, it can be done.
Oh, and one more trick, this controller can handle a few 5ft light strips at once. You need the right size power supply. The trick is to run the multiple light strips in parallel, all 3 or 4 strips start at the controller output. The light strips themselves don't have the internal wiring to handle a long run, but that controller can handle multiple strips tied to it.
