I purchased these phones unheard based on the available reviews. I was expecting significantly improved sound over My Master and Dynamic MH40s and Audio Technica ATH -MSR7s. The ATH-MSR7s were around $200 and the M&Ds were around $400.
Significantly better is pretty much exactly what I got, That said, I've also discovered you can spend a lot less on iems than these cost and still kick the butt of the vast majority of over ear and on ear phones costing double.
How do these compare to other iems? They have a definite dynamic driver sound, but very clear and fairly neutral. Sound at moderate volumes is impressive thanks to astonishing detail. At higher volumes the detail gets brittle and the mid bass turns muddy. However, if you prefer to listen below hearing damage levels, these phones reward you with crystal clear detail. It's like looking into a 30 foot deep tide pool and watching moving curtains of light caused by the ripples on the surface cross the bottom.
In the sweet spot, the sound profile is a little enhanced in the sub bass region but not tremendously so. There's some bloom in the upper bass region, giving a dynamic driver character.. The top dips near the "nails on chalk board" portion of the spectrum, then comes back up before rolling off again. It's warmer than neutral and a hair dark on top, but overall fairly neutral, sound stage is forward and not super wide. Using a high performance Amp and DAC seems to expand the soundstage a bit.
The silicon ear inserts work well and I had no problem getting a good seal. The foam tips are another story. They're hard and large- I don't think they'd work well for any ear smaller than an elephant's. Per personal preference, I use Comply T200 memory foam tips wich give me superior seal and comfort.
Isolation is not exceptional but good enough if you aren't somewhere really noisy like a subway.
Now to the sound: The first thing that hit me was that these were not as bass heavy, not even with the bass filter. Though I must admit that I may be getting fooled here because these sound SO much crisper and brighter that the bass could still be the same but since the highs come through so much more it may just be fooling me. There is still some damn good bass in these little things, much more bass than something so small should be able to produce - add in the fact that there is ZERO distortion at high volume, and it's just ridiculous. I tried Metallica, Deadmau5, Carpenter Brut - SUPER CLEAN with great bass, I have not complaints at all. When I put on the T10i's to compare, the difference was night and day. I couldn't believe it, but the T10i's sounded kind of muffled by comparison.
Very happy with these things, well done RHA!!
Edit: After about a week of serious use I tried my T10i's again, and I can say with 100% certainty that these are not as bass-ey. Still sounds great though.
I'm still breaking in these IEM's but I'm very pleased with the sound. Great detail. Build quality is very good.
I'm listening to them with an OPPO HA-2 DAC/AMP, listening to 320kb/s mp3 and flac files.
I'm using the reference filters. The choice of tips is incredibly important. I switched out between the memory foam tips and found the double flange tips perfect for me. I'm sure that different people will like other tips better.
I bought my pair from the warehouse deals to save some money. That worked out well for me but if I knew how good they would sound I'd have been happy to pay for new as well.
On to the actual product. Amazing. I don't feel like I need the bass filters. Great bass, great mids, great high end. Crystal clear sound. All with the reference filter. I haven't even felt the need to experiment with the treble filter. Comfortable, damn near indestructible. Absolutely worth the $240 price new. I feel like I stole them only paying $165 with free shipping. They needed a bit of burn in, they are kinda harsh at first, but once that calms, down they rock. I highly suggest that you give these a try.
Not only is sound quality improved and spectacular, this design is the most comfortable headphones you'll ever wear. They're virtually weightless with the over the ear design which is very important to me because I use these daily for long periods of time on conference calls.
The youtube reviews will lead you to believe that the bass doesn't hit as the previous model but I call BS on that. It hits just as hard and more importantly the bass carries on a wider frequency. You will not be disappointed. Hats off to RHA on these headphones. I'm in love.
