Anybody who knows me, knows my political judgment is more in line with this writer than, probably, any of the myriad of pundits providing forecasts these days. Whee i differ, however, is in the degree to which he is predicting the demise of the Republican party in 2020.
Aside from that, however, Stanley B. Greenberg has provided, in R.I.P. G.O.P, a magnificent study in the challenges facing the two parties, and why the Democratic party appears positioned better for the mid-term future. Simply put, America is becoming, more and more, a nation of many different minority groups. Most all of which have been maligned by Pres. Trump.
Where the writer oversteps, though, is in degree. Many Hispanics, and many other immigrants, tend more towards conservative politics than either Greenbeg or Trump seem to understand. As Trump hurls insults at people with brown skin, he is kicking in the teeth many voters who tend to abhor abortion and sexual orientation issues. Republicans more inclined to embrace such immigrants have long won against those who presume people of color are liberal and progressive.
Also, there is great risk inherent in a democrat party presidential candidate who embraces socialism. Thus, 2020 may not be as likely to see the sort of New America the author projects upon his readers.
Having stated my reservations, I want to make it clear that I very much enjoyed this book and recommend it. The vast amount of research, indicated by reams of footnotes at the end of the book, does paint a pretty picture. I only hope that democrats don't find a way to botch it up and that my country can return to the trajectory of sanity and inclusiveness it was headed in when Obama's term concluded in 2016. If we remember this time to heed the needs of the white middle class, especially in terms of religious tolerance and respect, we should do fine.
Last comment, that needs to be stated. The men and women responsible for our security, in the armed forces and in police jurisdictions, need our respect and appreciation. It is only a few of them who abuse us and our fellow Americans. We must root them out, but not sacrifice the vast majority who keep us safe...
