Cassie Hayes writes a very enjoyable story about Gemma and Colton in the 15th of the RNWMP series. Finnegan, our arctic fox is featured again, which is always fun. Colton is a new Mountie, eager to right wrongs in his new career, Gemma is running from her con artist mother and looking to start a clean slate for herself. Bootlegging is a continuing problem in this area of Canada and is affecting the local Indian tribe who are buying the moonshine and not trapping furs to make a living like they should. A man from Gemma's mother's past shows up and recognizes Gemma. He will cause trouble for her and her new straight shooter husband if she doesn't cooperate with him. He uses her friend Lily and Lily's children as a threat so Gemma will do as he wishes. It is heartwrenching to see Gemma want to do the right thing and expose this man for the fraud that he is even as she knows it will be the end for her with Colton when he finds out about her true past. Will Colton learn the difference between only seeing right and wrong without understanding extenuating circumstances? There is love, friendship and suspense in this tale.

Now we get the background story about Gemma, who has quite a different life experience from the average young lady in 1911. Colton has been raised in a coastal town in New Brunswick and is fresh out of Mountie training. This story is a good lesson about right and wrong and the grey area between.

Unfortunately, things aren't always what they seem. Colton trusts everyone to be honest and true. He learns the hard way that life isn't always exactly black and white. Truth isn't always true and lies are not always lies. Sometimes things get blurry and all messed up, but in the end it works out.... Usually.

Colton is a new Mountie and only believes in good and bad, black and white, no gray. He has some things to learn and Mountie Malcolm is the right one to teach him.

Gemma just wants to get away from her con artist mother and when she hears of Miss Hazel, she jumps at the chance to marry and get away from big cities.

It is interesting to see how these two learn new lessons and learn to adapt. A very good story. One I couldn't put down till I finished.
