From the Manufacturer
Pro-Aim Gaming Sensor
ROCCAT Kone's precise Pro-Aim Gaming Sensor effectively reduces Pick-Up-Flight. It is accompanied by a high-end 6.4 megapixel sensor measuring with 7080 frames per second, loss-free up to an acceleration of 20G. 1ms response time, 1000Hz polling rate and the adjustable resolution up to real 3200dpi give you the competitive edge to improve your aiming skills.
Tracking Control Unit
Every mouse pad is different. The laser of a standard gaming mouse is calibrated to an average for satisfactory results on most mousepads. Thats why the Kone is provided with the Tracking Control Unit. It is the first and only mouse to analyze the mouse pad and calibrate the laser power exactly to the surface.
Save CPU Power
The internal TurboCore Unit is the powerful heart of this tool. All mouse calculations are being processed internally, enabling you to add timing information on macros and saving vital CPU power for game processing tasks.
Create Unlimited Profiles
128kB of internal memory allows you to save up to five game profiles containing macros for your game characters and individual settings directly on the mouse. You can use any of these profiles without driver. Create unlimited profiles with ultra-long macro sequences and parallel key commands for each mouse button using the Macro Manager and save them on your HDD.
The special right handed hybrid shape of the Kone is equally suitable for claw or palm grip. The rubberized top and side surfaces provide maximum grip even in the heat of the final game.
Customizable Light System
Fully customize the look of the Kone the way you want. The light system comprises five LEDs which are capable of displaying the full spectrum of colors. You can independently change the color of any LED and activate special light effects, or simply turn off the lights.
Weighing just 118g (133g with cable), this mouse is an ultra-lightweight precision instrument. If you prefer a heavier mouse, choose between four different weights (5g, 10g, 15g, 20g) from the FastClip weight kit. Simply clip the weight into the dedicated slot. Only one press of a button releases the weight again. Thats it. No complicated processes involving unplugging and opening the mouse. Just two clicks and you're done.

Now, that said, on to the mouse itself. First, the finish _is_ smooth as some complain. Unfortunately, this is true of most mice, so holding that against this one specifically is rather pointless. The solution is simple. Go buy some $1 electrical tape, cut small strips, and put them on each side where your fingers go. The tape is rubbery and will give you a better grip than the normal surface. I've had to do this with a number of mice over the years and it works great -- though some electrical tape is smoother than others and obviously you want the kind that is less smooth. Alternately you can use a material such as Sugru (a sort of putty that cures into rubber letting you mold it as needed) on the sides, but the tape is a simple first step to fix the problem on any mouse in a way that you can just peel right off if you have to make a warranty claim. If the tape is too smooth you can also try making micro-abrasions on it with a razor (an Exact-o-Knife style razor works best.) Then it should have a great grip. (You can actually do this directly to the surface of the mouse, but that is quite permanent. Tape you can just peel right off and the manufacturer won't refuse RMAs then.)
As for sensitivity, accuracy, etc etc, I've found this one to meet my own standards. Many people think they need really high DPIs and I strongly disagree with this. By default systems accelerate mouse movements on a curve and then games are set to smooth this out and slow it down trying to compensate. So people then set higher DPIs in a further compensation. There's a better solution and this, like most modern mice, can do it: disable acceleration, set a reasonable DPI (1600-ish, maybe less for some, maybe more for others, but very close to that -- each person will have to experiment for themselves to find the right balance -- about 1400 to 1800 or so,) and set all games and Windows itself to use the mouse as close to 1:1 as possible so that each movement is perfectly linear. Then you find that you don't need 10,000 DPI to both move normally and to snipe accurately in a fast FPS game, just a steady hand. (Well, if you have an unsteady hand it won't hurt to set a single profile to a lower DPI. It does have the buttons to switch back and forth.)
Software-wise I found nothing really off. The software can change the mouse settings, but seems to not be as necessary as with most older mice. The mouse seems to remember all settings instead of just some as older mice used to do. (For example, as far as I can tell even the DPI is remembered when shutting down or rebooting.) It even remembers specific LED settings, not just whether or not they are on. (I set mine all the way down to the minimum -- 4, 4, 4 as anything lower is too low voltage and the LEDs shut off -- and it remembers this setting even in the BIOS. I recommend trying this as it's not as painfully bright and over-the-top as default settings but makes for a very nice sort of fading gradient.) The software lets you set pretty much any DPI you want within reason, so you can set it to whatever suits you best. And you can set it to only use one profile if you don't like switching back and forth like myself. (Many, such as Razer, tend to require you to have at least two profiles whether you want to or not. Then if you bump the DPI switch button it switches even if you never actually want to change DPIs.) It also supports the usual advanced settings like increased USB polling rates up to 1000Hz. Naturally you have the usual button configuration and macros (though I must admit I haven't really tested out the macro function) in the software. I do not know if the mouse stores complex macros in its own memory across reboots since I do not use macros.
Overall I've found it to be great for both comfort and function. I will try the G302 as I use a bit of an in-between grip style, but my suspicion is that it will be the backup mouse if this ever dies and this will remain my primary mouse from here on until I eventually wear it out. (I may even have to buy another just in case!) As I said, you don't need really high DPIs and etc if you set things up right, so I expect to keep using the same mouse for a very long time, not just until the latest thing with flashing superbright LEDs all around the rim comes out.
I was hoping this would be "the one". I have only tested it through a 3 day weekend of heavy use, mostly playing MOBAs. I could tell on day one this mouse was not for me.
My biggest complaint is the silky smooth finish of the entire mouse. I have read other reviews where people said they enjoyed the finish, but for me I really struggled with it. I noticed right away my accuracy and reaction time suffered. My hands very rarely get sweaty and I use a claw grip. It has a decent ergonomic shape on the left side for the thumb but does not have a comfortable place to put the ring finger and pinky. I use the side thumb buttons often when gaming. These could be in a little more comfortable position. As a result of not being able to use my pinky to grip the mouse effectively. Whenever I would push a thumb button I would lose most of the contol of my mouse, resulting in missing skill shots. I would descibe the feel of this mouse as being an ergonomic wet bar of soap.
My second biggest complaint is all the bloated components this mouse comes with and the pricetag that comes with it. The drivers are nice and you can do a lot with them, but I ended up turning all the special features off immediately. The achievement system is cool, but I dont want it. The easy click + feature is pretty cool, but I dont need it. The high 8400 DPI sensor is high class, but I only use ot around 2000 tops. The 16.8 million LED colors is neat and looks cool, but I can easily live without them. To use another analogy, its like wanting a cheese pizza, but getting a deluxe and having to pick all the extra toppings off. I would much rather see this mouse with half the features and half the price.
I want to make it clear I am not saying this mouse is worthless because it is not. It is a good quality mouse and I am sure a ton of people will love this mouse. I recommend you try this mouse out before you buy it if you can. Like I said earlier everybody has a different idea of what the perfect mouse is. I would be willing to try other Roccat products, just overall the Kone has been disapointing for me.
