Ms. Abel’s writing style is fluid and easy to read. The book is written in alternating point of views and within each chapter clearly marked who side is ‘talking.’ It was easy to follow and focus on the story, and brought lots of Skylar and Rusty’s emotions to the surface. Her main characters are well developed with a believable supporting back story, and secondary characters that are essential in making a very strong plot. Add to this a psychotic stepsister into the mix, Naked Edge just makes a nice suspenseful read.
This story is about how love can heal and second chances, one of my favorite tropes. That being said, Naked Edge contains mild sensual scenes and feels more like a young adult book. That’s not a bad thing, but I recommend this book for those that like their stories not steamy. Nice job, Ms. Abel.
My rating: 4
I was given a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review
Naked Edge is the first book that I have read by Charlotte Abel so I wasn't sure what to expect. It is a second chance romance between Skylar and Rusty. Skylar was forced to leave without a trace and Rusty believed that she abandoned him in his time of greatest need. What he didn't know was that she had to go into witness protection. Once she was free to return to her former life, she went back and found that Rusty had pretty much become a heartless manwhore when it came to women. What she doesn't know is that Rusty thinks that she left because of what happened when he got back to his house after their first time together and made promises of forever. Eventually the misunderstandings are cleared up and they do try again but with plenty of opposition from Rusty's pyscho stepsister. I mean it when I say this chick is cray-cray.
Overall, this was good read. I was a little overwhelmed with all of the climbing terminology at the beginning, but then I found the glossary in the back which was very helpful. I liked that it was written in first person but alternated between the two main characters. I would have liked to see a little bit more resolution with one character in particular, but such is life. I would recommend this book and can't wait to read more in the series.
Naked Edge is a New Adult novel. I don’t normally read New Adult and to be quite honest I didn’t realize it WAS when I requested the book.
That said, Naked Edge is an excellent read. I enjoyed it very much once I got started.
Skylar and Rusty were just beginning to find their way when Skylar disappeared. The choice wasn’t hers and now she has come home. She really wants to get back to her life but four years is a long time. A lot has changed.
Skylar disappeared when Rusty needed her the most. All he knows is that she was gone without a reason and after a couple of years he quit expecting her to come back. And he changed. He was no longer the boy she loved.
This book has anger, love, confusion, fear, blackmail, and just to make it interesting, a psychotic female who wants Rusty for herself. Buckcherry’s “Crazy Bitch” kept playing through my head.
I thought at first that I was not going to like the story because of all the rock climbing terminology. But that turned out to be only a small part of the story. My only complaint is that the glossary should have been at the beginning of the book instead of the end. This is an ebook and it is just plain irritating to try to “flip” to the back to look up a term.
The story was set up wonderfully. The villain was very well written. The secondary characters were complex and just yearning for their own stories. The main characters, Skylar and Rusty, really have a lot of anger and bitterness to deal with.
