Setup isn't as easy as it may seem when you don't have the right network prefix, but I didn't take no for an answer. Once setup, I was seriously disappointed that it doesn't support Windows 7 64. Should have read that fine print.

Worked GREAT for controlling a MATRIX video switch over a home network.

The unit has "froze" and had to be restarted a couple of times in a year. There is an update for it...if it fixes this "problem" this puppy is "perfect".

This converter does what it says it does - it converts a serial stream into a TCP stream. You basically open a TCP socket connection to this device and read the same bytes you would read if you had a serial connection to the data source. The only problem is that when the device turns on, there is a glitch where it writes a byte onto the serial bus without it being commanded to. In a lab setting that might be fine, but definitely not ok in a production setting.

I spent 3 days trying to get the StarTech NETRS2321E to communicate with the serial ports on my Merlin Magix phone system. Contacted tech support via their Live Chat and was not able to get problem resolved. The problem was with the Virtual Serial port driver & software that comes with the unit. To get it to work I had to download and install "HW VSP3 - Virtual Serial Port" from HW Group (free download). The HW VSP3 software worked the 1st time with very little effort to configure it to work with the NETRS2321E.

***EDIT****
If you can spend a few more dollars I would recommend the StarTech.com 1-Port RS232 Serial over IP Ethernet Device Server (NETRS232_1) over this one. It's basically the same unit but has more features and a lifetime warranty. This IP server is still a great little unit, I just like the NETRS232_1 better.
***EDIT****

I am using these at work to add network support to some older serial instrumentation in the natural gas industry. These have worked flawless in the field for several months with no hangups or need for reboots. Also, these are well priced when comparing to competitors.

My setup:

Universal server -- polls IP port 502
--IP / Serial Server -- converts IP to RS232
--Electronic Flow Meter -- responds with modbus RTU registers

I have an Aurora solar inverter that puts out RS485 data in my garage. I screwed this little unit into the wall right next to the inverter panel...set it up with my notebook PC using the built in web page...connected my RS485 twisted pair wires coming from my inverter in to the RS485 terminals on the StarTech module...connected my LAN into the RJ45 connector and my solar array data was immediately available on my upstairs desktop. I love projects where you can go directly from the box to functional operation without problems. It has been running 24 hours a day for the past month and is still going strong.

I downloaded the latest drivers for this device, installed on a small Intranet with a Dell i3 6GB memory using Win10 Professional. Works rather well! I have four configurable virtual serial ports -mix and match from RS485 to RS232. All grabbing data from various electrical metering devices.

the included "driver" is software driver and not a true driver in the conventional sense. it is not in place when the server boot and doesn't load until a logged in user starts the program... not useful at all in a headless server. but none of that matters as the device is very very poor at what it does. after more than a week of working with startech.com's awful tech support. i found that my fax modem would never ever work with this device. ended up buying from a competitor and am having much more success! avoid all startech.com products!!!!
