Possible to Convert to Fit 6-Quart Instant Pot & Keep Handles

I bought this for my Instant Pot, but opted to keep the handles. Just think how much stuff can fit in this basket for steaming! If the solder spots are C-clamped while manipulating with pliers, you improve your odds of keeping the handles. To fit the 6-quart Instant Pot, there is only 1/4" between the basket and the liner pan of the Instant Pot, so the handles cannot jut out more than that. Also, the handles need to bend a bit so the Instant Pot lid can be secured. I have attached some photos of our practical (if not perfectly executed). I tested that I was indeed able to lock the lid of the Instant Pot with the basket in place.

If you have an 8-quart Instant Pot, you won't have to manipulate the pot as much.

If the manufacturer reviews the comments on Amazon, he should realize that a slight variation in the product design, eliminating the need for customer jury-rigging, could justify a slightly higher price, yet result in sold-out inventories!

Pop Those Handles Off!

Reviewer Mona Lisa is smack dab right on about this basket being perfect for fitting inside the "Instant Pot". Rather than using pliers to remove the soldered handles I just clamped each of them into the vice out in the garage. Then, a little finger's worth of pressure and off they popped! We have steamed vegetables, eggs, even sticky rice wrapped in banana leafs! My wife loves her Instant Pot even more because of this basket... and I think you will too!

6 quart pressure cooker

Aldi's sells a 6qt 11psi electric pressure cooker for $40 every Fall, and I wanted to try an alternative to the typical soft silicon baskets which are all really hard to lift out above the boil water of this 6"x6" pot. I wish designers would pay attention to how people use this product and put the handles on loops so they can be leaned inward. Since I don't have metal working tools, my DIY solution after snapping the handles off was to use 50LBs braided fishing line and silicon air tubing to fashion a handle tied around where the mesh doubles up under the rim. if you are a clean freak you can seal the job with aquarium silicon glue to keep food debris out of my handle design. I was relieved to find the raised base leaves room for 2 cups of water, which is the minimal amount for boiling water to steam the food above in a 6qt pot. I steam a gallon of roots and nightshades twice a week, so this basket will help make this healthy routine go smoother. I also steam a lot of chicken as I like the moist flaky texture and that most of the excess fat found in low cost legs and thighs dark meat will end up in my boil water, not still in the chicken flesh. this way I can enjoy tasty chicken protein just as lean as boring white breast meat for a third of the cost.

I'm stunned at how many reviewers are giving this basket a one-star rating because it doesn't fit in their Instant Pot. Ummm...... the manufacturer doesn't make any attempt to advertise it for that purpose. Amazon may say 'frequently bought with' but again, the basket description makes absolutely NO claims that it works in the IP. It's like buying a blender and complaining that it won't wash the dishes for you. So if you want to complain to anyone, complain to all the IP websites that tout this without bothering too mention that it doesn't work unless you break out your tools.

Okay, all that said, I did buy this for my instant pot, however I read the reviews and knew what I was getting. I knew I'd need to bend or remove the handles. That was a challenge, and required two people and three adjustable wrenches, but it now sits beautifully in my 8-quart pot. I don't know the dimensions of the 6-quart, so I don't know whether it would work in one.

I'm going to mostly be using this for making hard-cooked eggs, not veggies etc., so cleaning it won't be a big issue for me. However, as with any mesh strainer, it may be tricky to clean food that gets caught in the mesh. That's the nature of mesh strainers, so it would be silly to downrate it for that.

I've attached a photo of our metalsmithing. I'm holding two adjustable wrenches clamped tight on the welds holding the handle (a locking wrench would have worked better but we didn't have any). My husband is using another adjustable wrench to bend the handle.

I had my husband remove the handles with some pliers which was very easy as they are soldered on. The removal did not damage the basket.
This basket fits perfectly in the Instant pot 6 quart cooker, and there is no need to use a "foil sling" to get it out of the cooker. It holds a lot of greens (collards/kale) and you can place an inverted pan lid or plate on top of the greens to keep them from interfering with the mechanism on the lid of the cooker.

It's not easy to find baskets to fit inside a pressure cooker that will hold as much as this one does! I love that it allows all the steam to hit the food directly, verses many that have limited number of holes and a lot of metal.

I removed the one handle and just bent the other upright and a bit towards the center to use in my IPDUO6, it still fits and doesn't interfere with the locking lid when pressurized. Leaving the one handle on to me lets it be easier to grab it from the IP for removal after cooking is done. I think the IP owners made this so very popular with its adaptability and good fit for the use in the IP pressure cooker. Great basket, can be used for so many things, but especially in my pressure cooker for HB eggs, potatoes, cob corn and other veggies, bone broth, whatever needs steaming, just pile them in to the top it is very sturdy. I even cooked a meat loaf in it in the IP , all grease drained away and it was delish but it did have to be served from the strainer as I didn't feel like trying to remove it for serving on a platter, so not the most appealing visually, but what the heck it was just one of those days ykwim, and the silicone cookware was still waiting to be delivered . Cleaned up easily afterwards too, just used a soapy dish brush and running hot water. Great strainer too as the mesh holes size is perfect.and the raised feet allow fast drainage of liquids and/or good steam circulation. I use this thing a LOT for all kinds of stuff, so to me it already paid for itself in the first month of use.
