It calls for cardamom as optional, but since my taste for chai started with the authentic stuff, I wanted to add the cardamom for sure. I have tried to beat it, grind it, everything...but its a tough little spice and there are always big-crunchy bits at the bottom of my mug that I don't like to eat. So I decided to put the powder in a strainer and pour the water over, so the bigger bits stay behind.
This mesh is SUPER fine, sometimes the other spices, cinnamon, cloves, etc get caught in the mesh. It doesn't bother me too much but I do notice it every time. Just by using the sink I can't clear the spices from the mesh 100% after use but this doesn't bother me because I use it for the same thing every day. (It probably would come cleaner in a dishwasher, or if you soaked it, but I'm using it at work so all I have time for is a quick rinse until the next use)
It is very well "balanced" I can put the strainer in my mug and pour water over it without fearing that the strainer will tip over and spill.
