I do IT for a living and until I received the newer firmware this was a nightmare. I had two Win 8.1 machines that were hard wired that kept pulling a 169.254.X.X address. The solution until I received the different firmware was to set them using a static IP. I then set that IP as reserved in the router.
I love the features like plugging my network printer into the back for sharing. No more making sure my computer is on all of the time. The USB external hard drive connection / FTP thing is also neat. I got it around $185 and would recommend it for sub $200. Anything more is too much.
ASUS customer service is nonexistent. After my second brand new router, their response was to ship #2 back for #3. I didn't pay over $200 for a router that I would have to pay to ship back and wait a month for a replacement. Then they started the whole troubleshooting list over again like this was something new!
Their problem is noise rejection that crashes the interface. When you find you cannot access the web interface, turn off the router, wait a minute or two, and turn it back on.
It works but I don't think for $200+, that's how a router should work.
The Hardware itself is really good. I turned off the 2.4GHz band completely and only use the 5GHz 802.11AC, At first I was a little worried that it would not have enough penetrating power to reach all over my apartment. But I have 3/4 to full signal at the furthest corners of my apartment, going though about 4 walls. Granted my place is only 960 sqft and the router is pretty close to the center of the floor plan, but I was still impressed.
My last 3 routers have been from ASUS all running DD-WRT, and I have loved them all, with no complaints.
