Like may of us the firm ware out of the box was... not the best. I upgraded to the newest and had a lot of issues. After contacting their customer support, and a few days of waiting for a response, they sent me instructions on where to get a different firmware version that fixed my problem.

I do IT for a living and until I received the newer firmware this was a nightmare. I had two Win 8.1 machines that were hard wired that kept pulling a 169.254.X.X address. The solution until I received the different firmware was to set them using a static IP. I then set that IP as reserved in the router.

I love the features like plugging my network printer into the back for sharing. No more making sure my computer is on all of the time. The USB external hard drive connection / FTP thing is also neat. I got it around $185 and would recommend it for sub $200. Anything more is too much.

My MacAir uses AC and 'N' was getting crowded. Price was expensive but reviews looked good, so I took a chance. My mistake. Router supposedly supports USB 3.0 and 2.0. Don't bother, it does not work well. Router consistently drops the external drive. When that goes away, so does the web interface.

ASUS customer service is nonexistent. After my second brand new router, their response was to ship #2 back for #3. I didn't pay over $200 for a router that I would have to pay to ship back and wait a month for a replacement. Then they started the whole troubleshooting list over again like this was something new!

Their problem is noise rejection that crashes the interface. When you find you cannot access the web interface, turn off the router, wait a minute or two, and turn it back on.

It works but I don't think for $200+, that's how a router should work.

I almost decided to return this unit due to extremely unstable connectivity using " latest" 68R firmware. Then I decided to use the latest 68U firmware and uploaded manually. It sovled all the problems I have. Now I have a stable, fast speed 801AC router!

Bought from Walmart. Pulled it from the box. Set it up and plugged it in. Followed the directions. A few minutes later, my network was set up. Immediately following network setup, it automatically detected an available firmware update and after my approval, downloaded and installed it. Pretty easy compared with previous routers I've had. Hopefully they don't put out any firmware updates that ruin it (as I've seen in other routers). Provides a couple of other features I haven't used yet, including USB connections into the router. Expensive but definitely very good quality and hopefully will last many years.

So from what I hear the stock firmware is crap I can't speak to that for sure, but it did not seem pleasant in the 2 minutes I had it up. I only used it long enough to install DD-WRT.

The Hardware itself is really good. I turned off the 2.4GHz band completely and only use the 5GHz 802.11AC, At first I was a little worried that it would not have enough penetrating power to reach all over my apartment. But I have 3/4 to full signal at the furthest corners of my apartment, going though about 4 walls. Granted my place is only 960 sqft and the router is pretty close to the center of the floor plan, but I was still impressed.

My last 3 routers have been from ASUS all running DD-WRT, and I have loved them all, with no complaints.

I didn’t buy mine on Amazon only because I needed it a.s.a.p., had an Arris, the Arris was just so incompatible with, well almost everything. Anyways a ten year old kid can set this router up, connect it, pop the installation DVD in, read the manual some; you are on your way. Went into the setting utility, my kid’s play Xbox live, this unit has optimized for Xbox option which is great. I set my setting to 5 GHz rather than the 2.4 GHz band width. My neighbors get six bars. I will say this, for I-phone 4 & five users, when you try to setup Wi-Fi with your phone, you have to take an extra step, go to settings in your phone, choose WIFI, look at the name you have your router setup as. Go to other, type that name in exactly as shown, choose security type, mine is WAP2, but the I-phone only will only work as WAP. My router is setup mid-way in my house, my house is 2300 square feet. Even my PS3 at the farthest end gets an 80% signal strength, this just because the internal Wi-Fi signal from the PS3 is so weak. My kids Xbox’s all have 100% including all our pcs. Other than the I-phone settings, I love it. My wife’s I-phone six plus detected it right off no special settings had to be made.

Fantastic speeds. I was having drop out issues with old type N router for streaming Video to my Blue Ray. This cured the wireless Bandwidth issues and the range is incredible in my two story home. I get incredible 4 bars on my laptop in my shed which is over 100 feet away and thru 3 walls. Radio is 2.4 and 5 GHz. In conjunction with a Surfboard Access Point easily 30Mbpss download and 6Mbps upload on Comcast. They advertise 25Mbps and 5Mbps so it easily meets and exceeds those speeds.

I purchased this router to replace one that was eight years old. So far I'm very happy with the wireless speed and the wireless signal strength. The router software/menu system seems fairly straightforward. Even though I really didn't know what I was doing I was able to set everything up quickly in a short timeframe. I do have a large backup drive attached to the USB 3 port and I'm extremely happy with the speed of that port. It does have two USB ports (2.0 & 3.0) which is handy for attaching two shared devices. I did try attaching my (old) inkjet printer to the 2.0 port so it could be more easily shared. This printer is generally powered off, powering it on only when needed. The router did have a little trouble with the fact that the device isn't always powered on and at times it wouldn't recognize the printer when powered on again. So I moved the printer to a connected desktop instead. Absolutely no other problems or complaints with this router at all.
