This book is so over the top contrived with its "I'm going to make you fall asleep" storyline and its condescending "sleep now, child" tone that, even if it worked on my crazy 3 year old, I may have still taken it out back and beaten it for talking to my child the way it did.
But I didn't even have to choose between sleep and dignity for this dumpster fire of a book since it ended with my son adamantly refusing to buy into it's message and running around his room yelling, "no sleep!" like a mad man.
Save your money and just read a book your child actually enjoys in a slow, creepy, douchey way. If it works, cool, you can just do that from now on. If it doesn't, and consequently pisses your child off, I'm pretty sure this book is going to do that one hundred-fold.

Editorial Reviews
From School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2—Roger the Rabbit cannot fall asleep. His father has nodded off, as have his siblings. His mother suggests that she and Roger take a walk to visit Uncle Yawn, "who was the world's kindest wizard and who lived just on the other side of the meadow." Written with a specific language pattern based on psychological techniques, this rather verbose picture book offers harried and desperate parents the promise of a magical story that will soothe their children to sleep, while offering relaxation and mindfulness techniques to help children take control of their thoughts and prepare for slumber. The artwork is mediocre and does not enhance the text. But according to the author's note in the front of the book, the artwork matters little; Ehrlin tells parents that "it is best if the child is lying down while listening, instead of looking at the pictures, so that he or she can relax even more." Ultimately, the book is instructional and didactic, specifically written for children who experience great difficulty winding down at the end of the day. VERDICT Most people should stick with the bedtime classics that soothe and calm, such as Margaret Wise Brown's Goodnight Moon, Mem Fox's Time for Bed, or Peggy Rathman's Goodnight Gorilla.—Lisa Kropp, Suffolk Cooperative Library System, Bellport, NY

So I get the idea here. The book uses hypnosis techniques to help lull you're little one to sleep. And you're buying this book because you will do ANYTHING to get your child to sleep at this point, but you realize people frown on giving them Benadryl as sleep so toddler hypnosis book it is. First, this book feels impossible to read. It's long, and really repetitive, and basically works by boring you both to sleep. Second, my toddler was on to my game the second time I read this. She knew there was something weird about the book and that it was, in fact, trying to trick her into sleeping which was something she had no interest in doing.
So save your money, and accept they are never to going to sleep. Ever. Sorry to be the one to break it to you but there is no magic bullet. Or book.

Magic - both puts to sleep, and calms down - both my child and myself. The audio version is gold.

I have this in cd form for my son's room, and the audiobook downloaded so we can take it with us when we travel. It is amazing. I think the actual book itself would not be as magical, since it would mean I have to open it and read the words, which means a light on, and my voice, which may or may not be as soothing. BUT, the audio versions - 5 stars - or 10 stars - or 100 stars. I have done yoga over many years, and this book is basically a meditation but using a basic children's story. I use this audio cd for my son at night for the past 2 years (started when he was 3, now is 5.) It puts him to sleep, but more so - it calms him down. If there is a lot of hyper going on in the room, I can turn this on and it immediately mellows him out and any other child with him. It's magic. I use it also for myself if I am having trouble falling asleep, lots on my mind - I turn this on and it's magic. I don't think I've ever gotten to the second reader (the audio version has the book read twice - first by a man, second by a woman.) It is very mellow. The first narrator is better, in my opinion, because he speaks more calmly and in a deeper voice. But that might be personal preference, and it's great to have both options on the same cd and on the audible download. I have recommended this cd to many people for their kids, and even for themselves. It's magic.

I started this book for the first time a week ago. It not only DID NOT WORK AT ALL, but it pulled the energy out of my 7 yr old. She was highly annoyed by the book and said it was dumb, made no sense, and stop saying my name!!! It really is written in a weird way but I don't think it's poor grammar or bad translation, I think it's just worded in the best way to lure kids into sleep. I was really upset, I want my free time back! But I told myself I didn't give it a fair shot.. we were very busy leading up to it, she had just watched tv and then listened to me frantically try and hunt down this book in a pile of holiday stuff with bright lights on and shouting from room to room. Of course it didn't work. Tonight though, it worked immediately 3 pages in! She was sound asleep! We didn't do screen time before bed just a movie night till 30 min before bed and then she snuck on her kindle for a bit. I had to literally pull it from her!! She insisted she wasn't going to listen to my stories. I read her a new Amelia Bedelia book (chapter book)and then moved to the bunny book. She said NOOOOO and covered her ears and said she was not cooperating. I said if you're still awake at the end I'll toss you in your own bed and you can do what you want in bed. So she had incentive NOT to sleep really! Well she did. It was a miracle and I kissed the book. I seriously kissed it.

My 2 year old struggles with bedtime. This was certainly not a magic bullet the first few times we read it... but that changed. After the first few nights, he started asking for it at bedtime. Now he's out like a light by the end of the book. It seems to be more effective as he understands more and more of the language used in the book, and also gets better as we have become more accustomed to the book's tone and rhythm.
My biggest complaint is probably the book's biggest strength - it's boring. The artwork is minimal, it's very wordy, and the paperback version is not easy for my kid to hold himself. Those are all probably good things, though, for a bedtime book.
**UPDATE**
After a month or so the magic just stopped. Like dead stop, no taper, no warning, just POOF. Now it's just a boring book that neither entertains nor tires out my kid.

I think it would've been better to have just read a regular bedtime book that ...

It did not work one bit for our 4-year old. He had way too many questions about the characters and whenever the book suggested that he was getting sleepy, he'd resist and respond with "Not me!"
It doesn't help that he knows how to read and so he was reading along with me the whole time. We read from cover to cover, which took us almost 30 minutes to read; I sang 2 lullabies + 15 more minutes is what it took to finally get him to go to sleep. I think it would've been better to have just read a regular bedtime book that was shorter.

Can't believe it actually works!!!! Wow!

My son has been a constant nightmare when it comes to bedtime. We've always tried to keep a routine but to no avail. He just fights and fights against sleep. I was totally sceptical about this book but wow was I wrong. Firstly you must get them nice and tired first, so they at least lie down and start to listen. If he is jumping around it obviously won't work. Once lay down my son tries to drown out the words by singing, but he still doesn't win..it really works. Took about 3 go's to nail it but since then it has worked every night and now he goes and gets the book himself! Make sure you follow the instructions and don't give up..keep reading and suddenly they are zonked. Absolute life changer! :-) god bless the author.

It actually works! On 8 year old with anxiety and sleep difficulties, no less!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 2, 2019Verified Purchase
Bought this book on recommendation for my anxious 8 year old daughter, who is often still awake at gone 10pm just not sleepy and full of thoughts and worries. The first time she didn't fall asleep during the story, but it certainly settled her. On subsequent occasions when my husband has read it (I think his deeper monotone voice helps), she has fallen asleep before the end! It's miraculous!

This book is about a rabbit who tries to fall asleep. It’s meant to be read to your child to help them fall asleep. There are instructions of how the book ought to be read for example, the italic words in the story should be spoken very quietly etc.. with the aim that your child will eventually dose off. My sister recommended it for my insomniac 3 year old and I was sceptical at first but it actually has worked. He falls asleep before we get to the end, RESULT!!

Brilliant! I didn't believe how good it was at first and thought friend was exaggerating how quickly it helped her 3.5 year old fall asleep! It worked for my 3 year old daughter....after years of bedtime battles. So good as so relaxing for us both which is the important bit. After the third night reading it my daughter had fallen asleep before the end of the book! Have bought the elephant one too so we can mix it up.

I am absolutely astonished at how well this book works, we have had issues at bedtime for a few weeks now. Tonight was only the 3rd night of reading it and Phoebe was asleep by 33%. It took the whole book the 1st night and most of it last night. We go to bed, read a chosen short story (that's always been our routine) then she has 1 or 2 weeks. A cuddle and I start to read the book, I ignore any fidgeting or speaking and just continue to bbc read the book, eventually Phoebe falls asleep. I have continued to read the whole book- unsure as to when to stop using it, but all working just now so am happy that bedtime is no longer a battle. Thanks Carl-Johan
