my thanks to the publisher and tour host for the review opportunity
The most intriguing thing about Xander? You won't be keeping any secrets from this guy. He can hear your every thought. This skill makes catching the baddies pretty awesome until he faces his most important case ever--a matter of life and death for a kidnapped woman named Isleen.
Mark this book as one with strong men and stronger women. Recommended for readers who enjoy dark romantic suspense with a supernatural twist. You might have to sleep with the light on.
Xander Stone: a telepathic "freak" that can't shut off the painful voices in his head; rejected by his parents for his unusual ability.
Isleen Walker: a young woman tortured, starved and beaten, along with her grandmother, for an ability she doesn't even realize she possesses.
Xander has "heard" the thoughts of those around him for years, unable to turn "off" the voices which bring him severe and ongoing pain, and are only drowned in excessive alcohol. The sweet young woman's voice has called to him for years, begging for succor, but Xander does his best to ignore it, forcing himself to turn away from her pleas for mercy.
Isleen and her grandmother Gale were kidnapped some eight years ago, undergoing starvation, beatings and torture, all in the name of destroying the "demons" that possessed them. Isleen doesn't understand why or how, but she knows Xander is the key to their freedom. Against almost insurmountable odds, Xander rescues Isleen and her grandmother from their captor, and the road to unimaginable discoveries begin.
Together, they uncover what it takes to become whole, complete.... and to face their tormentors in a showdown in a final race to freedom... or death.
Abbie Roads' debut novel reads as anything but. This is an amazing story, grabbing your attention and not letting go. I was intrigued, surprised, saddened and amazed at the twists and turns of this novel. It is complex, with excellent primary and secondary character development, superb plot development and a writing style that flows: imagine you are on a raft, floating down a placid lazy river that becomes a raging rapids, to switch once again to a slow moving river. It carries you through the entire story with a sense of continuity and completeness that is often missing in first novels. *There are some graphic scenes, so is not for the faint of heart.*
Isleen Walker, a woman who has been violated by any means necessary while held captive never thought she would be saved, let alone by the man who stars in her dreams of escapism. Fortunately for her, Xander is tangible, corporeal, and more than just a mere hope of illusion. However, evil lurks in unexpected places, waiting to envelope her new found happiness, and seal her fate; death. It will take her unexpected will, her unwavering faith, her tempestuous attitude, her infinite capacity for love, and her unique power to stop the darkness. Furthermore, it will take her and Xander as well as their connection, to serve justice and stop the evil that seeks to claim them both. Will they be able to hold tight to one another and put faith in why they’ve been brought together? You’ll have to read to find out!
If you read it, it will be so worth it! This novel is dark, gritty, disturbing, creepy, sexy, sweet, humorous, and utterly wonderful! There were quite a few twists and turns, which always provides moments of angst while our brains attempt to catch up with the directional change. I had, “What the ****,” moments. I had moments where I smiled. I had moments where I swooned. I had moments where I gasped in shock. I even had moments where I cringed, completely wigged out of my head. Let me tell you, this story has a little bit of everything for everyone. The chemistry was believable because the backstory was beautifully woven in, and I loved every minute of it. I enjoyed all of the secondary characters, especially Kent and Row. Hell, I even loved to hate the snotty, superficial Camille.
I feel as though I’ve been given an opportunity to not only praise a very new author, but the chance to start a journey from the beginning with what I am sure will be an amazing series. This book is not only unlike any other I’ve read, but well-written and enjoyable. I believe that anyone who gives it a chance will find a new favorite author. Abbie is definitely one to watch for! Happy reading!
