About the Author

Mike Gonzalez, a senior fellow at the Heritage Foundation, spent close to twenty years as a journalist, fifteen of them reporting from Europe and Asia. He left journalism to join the administration of President George W. Bush, first at the Securities and Exchange Commission and then at the State Department. He was born in Cuba in 1960 and holds a bachelor’s degree from Emerson College and an MBA from Columbia Business School. He and his Scottish-born wife, Siobhan, live in Bethesda, Maryland, with their three children.

A most important book to explain the Hispanic situation.

This is a fantastically valuable book for understanding the Hispanic mindset, the way the group has been handled politically, and what Republicans can do to win the valuable votes of the rapidly expanding demographic.

I am 76 years old, and learned to speak Spanish as a teenager. It is true that in those days, the word "hispanic" was not in use. In 1964 and 1965, as the author explains, important things happened to open the flood that ensued from the south.

Mike Gonzalez correctly points out that improvement in American education is the important element of future Hispanic success.

The leftist bent to the current teaching establishment prevents the improvement of our inner-city schools. Marilyn Jager Adams, in her new book, "ABC Foundations For Young Children", points out that most American students finishing first-grade still can't name and write all of the alphabet letters, a disaster holding back our schools, especially for poor minorities.

The blob is successfully blocking this important message, for stupid political reasons, and there are only a few glimmers of hope now visible. Hispanic parents have been traditionally too repectful of schools and teachers to demand improvement on this important issue, and are less likely to teach their kids to write before school.

Only time will tell whether this battle will be won by truth, or by the misguided followers of John Dewey.

I enjoyed this book as much for its historical background of the problem as for the suggestions for change. Mr. Gonzalez seems well versed from a personal perspective as well as research into the causes of our current immigration problem. I think his suggestions are worthy of merit but as usual will be difficult to implement. However this does not negate the importance of trying to accomplish this and I think his suggestions are worthwhile. His concepts of human, social, and financial capital are well thought out and pertinent. The twin pillars of education and family morals are also right on target. This is a very worthwhile read.

Should be required reading for policymakers, government officials, teachers, church and community leaders, and all those who worry about the future of America, the American dream, and the American way of life. Mr. Gonzalez, an immigrant as a child, does a superb job of explaining the great disservice our federal bureaucrats and politicians have done to immigrants from Latin cultures by lumping them into a manufactured "minority" group with the bureaucratically created label of "Hispanic." As he so carefully explains, people from Mexico, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Salvador, etc., are quite different in culture, values, aspirations, and needs. The damage that has been done by our federal bureaucrats and liberals is described in often unsettling detail, backed up by data and surveys. But Mr. Gonzalez, a former journalist, doesn't leave us wringing our hands. He offers wise counsel for how to turn this around, as difficult as that will be. I hope a lot more people -- of any heritage -- stumble on this gem as I did.
