Fierce and formidable, Jeanann Verlee is poised to make an indelible mark - much like a razor slashing silk - on what's become a comfortably placid poetic landscape. Her unflinching and uncompromising stanzas will change the way you move through the world. -Patricia Smith, "Blood Dazzler
Any storyteller can recount powerful experience [she] makes you feel something powerful is happening in the telling. From the Back Cover
"Besides writhing with racket and heart and wisdom, these poems bear witness to our real, difficult lives. They neither turn away, nor suggest grace isn't part of the story. No. They sing of the real in its ugly and glory. This is an honest book, and we are lucky to have it."
- Ross Gay, author of "Against Which"

I've seen Verlee perform recently, and I've seen a number of videos of her performing at Bowery Poetry Club. It's pretty wild hearing folks in the audience shout stuff like "Bring it, poet!" before she reads. She gets a rowdy crowd rowdier. Even though I've heard a number of these pieces before, I wanted to see them in print. If that's your story, I recommend getting the book.
At her best, she evokes a strong feeling of empathy in her audience. That's a good goal in writing: getting people to feel with you rather than for or against you. I wish her the best in her writing and upcoming projects. She's got a strong posse who care about her and her work.
