Editorial Reviews

Review

"The writing ... is polished and resonant with a sustained tension and emotion,  In dealing with a sensitive and important subject, Moore focused  on it with care and seriousness and insight.  I also liked the slow way in which Moore revealed the story which  mirrored the layered way in which Lucky allows herself to remember."
Ellen Seligman,
Random House of Canada.

I would probably give this 3.5 stars if I could. This is the first book I've read by this author so I don't know if the writing style of this book was the norm but I found it a bit disjointed. I realize that we are being shown glimpses into the mind and past of the main character in an attempt to explain her current mental state but those glimpses weren't always very clearly dilineated and often made the story hard to follow.

On the other hand, by the time I got to the end of the book I was rooting for Lucky so I found myself disappointed with how abruptly the story ended. I don't know if a sequel is planned but I would like to think there's more to Lucky's story. So if there is a sequel I will probably get it so I can find out how Lucky's life turns out.

So I'm sitting down to write this review of a novel that's lingering in my head, and the one word I'm thinking of is "interiority." This is a novel of interiors, the interiors of the horse-racing world, the interior of the possibilities of love and forgiveness, the interior life of a troubled pregnant young girl named Virginia who renames herself Lucky but who has not been so lucky. After a suicide attempt, and with the help of her psychiatrist and a groom who's a dwarf, she begins to deal with her past, and in particular the trauma that her foster father has inflicted on her.

The writing is lovely, the story interesting, the characters well-drawn, the love story unusual. I enjoy an insider's look at a world unfamiliar to me, and so I especially appreciated how Moore provides a matter-of-fact, come-along-with-me journey into the horse world without treating the me the reader as a tourist and getting all explain-y.

Living in a Muslim country as I do, I wish that the Muslim element in the story had either been left out or developed more. It didn't seem to me to be fully integrated, and I had all kinds of questions about Muslims in Canada, the whole immigration and inter-cultural thing – but then again developing this more probably would have blurred the focus of the story.

Just as you think the story is coming to a satisfactory if predictable conclusion, Moore pulls the saddle from out underneath you. The ending unsettles, and raises all the questions again, but this time you're sure that Lucky has the courage and wisdom and love to survive.

Ms. Moore's intriguing novel, Racing On A Wire, is a moving, thought-provoking, and unusual love story that will haunt me for a long time. The author writes with authority and passion, with well-developed characters, great prose, and few errors in this scary psychological mystery told in first person.

Moore's writing style is, in my opinion, stream-of-consciousness. The story flows beautifully, revealing details of a woman's experience with emotional and psychological trauma so horrific that her life threatens to become one big fantasy in order to hide it. The reader follows the main character, Virginia (Lucky), as she digs deeply into her subconscious to recall the incestuous relationship that drives her to the brink of suicide.

I could not put this book down, and although I found the surprise ending somewhat chilling and disappointing, I was nevertheless hopeful that Lucky will grow stronger as she continues healing.

This well-written psychological drama kept me intrigued from Page 1 to the End. Main character Lucky is anything but what her name implies -- her unstable background and baggage seamlessly woven into the plot containing a cast of off-beat characters, some likable, others quite despicable . My favorite character would have to be Lucky's romantic interest, Robbie, the dwarf racetrack groom whose wisdom and compassion rescued Lucky from a world of despair and stayed with me long after the story ended.

Racing on a Wire is a story about a young girl in foster care and her journey toward maturity and healing. The first part of the book is difficult to understand; what is reality and what is the girl’s imagination. Keep reading and you will find out, and that is the entire point of the story. She is a powerless little girl in an apparently and outwardly picture-perfect foster family. The mother seems to love her dearly and the father loves her too, in his own way. What is the difference between controlling love and healthy love? What would you do to obtain love and acceptance from those around you? Is the love of her parents’ religion…is that love? They think so. This girl gets away and changes her name to “Lucky”. As she begins her healing process, she has to deal with her various emotions and develop her own abilities and needs. What are her needs? Can she learn to forgive herself? Is she able to truly love anyone or anything? How can she learn to care for others until she learns to care for herself? It is a hard-won journey of hope, love, and healing. The journey is hard, with many set-backs, but worth it. I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book drew me in from the first page. It's a non-traditional romance and leaves you thinking about the ending. I cared very much about Lucky and was rooting for her throughout. The material about the horses and the track was also enjoyable and it's clear the author knows her subject matter. I hope she writes more.
