We have combined our heavy duty suction mount system with a mounting plate. The suction is rated to hold 20 pounds. Once it is attached to your windshield, it isn't coming down unless you want it to by pressing on the suction release. The angle of the mounting plate can be adjusted up and down. Your device attaches to the mounting plate with a heavy duty strip which we provide. We also include a dash plate with double sided tape so that the suction can adhere to your dash.

Eventually I figured out how to use the metal mounting bracket that holds the two original small suction cups to mount the 9500ix hanging down from this heavy duty mount. Just epoxy glue the metal bracket to the mounting plate! It's hard to describe, so I uploaded some photos to show how this works. This way, the 9500ix gets a completely unobstructed view of the front, and you can put the big suction cup and bracket behind the rear view mirror where it is not as noticeable and blocking your view of the road.
This way, the metal bracket slips into the slot at the top front of the 9500ix, and you don't need any adhesive velcro to attach the 9500ix to the mounting plate of this heavy duty mount.
The epoxy is barely noticeable - nevertheless, I painted it with some semi-gloss Testor's black model paint to protect the epoxy from being degraded by sunlight.
So far, the suction cup has worked well and is holding on tight to the windshield. With this arrangement, I can take the 9500ix off the mounting bracket using the release button for the small metal bracket rather than have to deal with velcro.
I purchased two of these in the belief if one ever failed I'd have another handy in the glove compartment, but instead all I did was waste $40.
I will be purchasing a different brand mount and considering this purchase a total wash-out. I highly recommend you avoid this product at all costs.
UPDATE: just installed another one, the original still going strong, use the same technique, this time on an Escort S55, I mount it to the dashboard, how? I removed the suction cup holder and level, then I use (2 screws one on each side) on a pathfinder dash there is a coin/sunglasses holder with a removable mat I attached the mount to it and that gives me a solid direct line of sight for the detector it's perfect, for me anyways, then you can either use a large 3M Velcro pad to hold the detector to the mount on top, or like I did use 4 small screws to hold the detector to the mount plate for a rock solid install.
I found out that the alcohol swab was not enough to prep the dashboard surface. Your dash like mine might be full of old oil based cleaners and protectants and may require a gentle degreaser to get it clean. I used Purple Power on a napkin and cleaned a spot on the dash and I also used some heavy duty Velcro, since my first attempt with the backing plate ruined the 3m tape and it adhered with no problem. So if you still have the mount this is the way to make it work.
It just doesn't work on my dash.
