Having had several skin conditions, the treatments were always meant to calm the inflammation, which implied to me that dermatology was a form of "witchcraft" - the same voo do for every condition. No attention was paid to the etiology
Dr Dattner wants us to know that causes of skin conditions can be found. This is the more rigorous path due to the complexity of our bodies and our interactions with environments. After many years as a researcher and clinician, Dattner is up to the task. He educates us about taking care of healthy skin, inflammation's key role in the disorders and possible treatments. He is well versed in alternative treatments which he readily shares.
The book has an open, personal style which is very engaging. Clinical vignettes are helpful and interesting. Dattner has done a major public service by writing this book. It makes us wiser and better able to partner with our doctors to tackle these disorders. Well done!
Dr. Dattner provides interesting perspective on skin conditions. His ideas of treating yourself internally make a lot of sense. There are spiritual issues which might be causing your skin problem to remain. Could be environmental, diet-related, or something else. Getting to the bottom of the cause of the issue rather than just masking the symptoms with traditional medicines makes a lot of sense. If the liver isn't functioning properly then the skin steps in to help get rid of the toxins from the body. Makes sense to me! What you put into your body, via your mouth (eating/drinking) or nose (breathing) or through your skin (absorption) is likely key to why skin (and other) problems exist.
For years in my teens and early 20s, I was taking tetracycline antibiotic capsules (4 per day) and also using Retin-A and benzoyl peroxide topicals for acne. Of course, I heard that I should stop eating fries or ice cream during my teenage years but no one knew then how dairy products could affect the skin. I now love the idea that hormones in milk could be the underlying cause of acne. Although I didn't drink a ton of milk, I did eat a lot of ice cream and cheeses. Growing up in the 1970s and 1980s, my diet included a lot of "convenience" foods that contained all sorts of chemical additives. When I think about what was in all those junk foods, it makes me cringe.
Dr. Dattner does discuss some herbal and vitamin supplements here and there in the book. Although I understand that each patient requires a different set of supplements per their condition, it would have been nice to see more studies on what worked for a set of patients, and what didn't work, rather than just a story or two per "disease."
Years ago, I'd gained some weight so I dropped from my diet those products with refined sugar and white flour. I stopped eating "fast food" and pizzas at restaurants, and also dropped my love of sugared sodas. I lost some weight and definitely felt and slept better. So there is some truth to how your diet affects your body.
I didn't notice much in the book about rosacea or other skin problems that are now associated with an abundance of Demodex and other skin mites. It seems that a diet high in sugar can intensify the mites' activity and give them the perfect place to procreate and multiply. These mites (and their die-off) can apparently cause red bumps and redness on the face which may or may not be effected by the traditional antibiotic treatments. The author dies discuss eczema, dandruff, acne, psoriasis, etc., and some possible causes and treatments for those skin ailments, but not much on rosacea,
Basically, my take away from this book is to find a local holistic dermatologist now that I'm a bit more versed in possible causes of skin problems. Once I find that local holistic dermatologist, then, together, we will design and follow a plan for my specific skin problem. With the constraints of what "traditional medicine" and medical insurance plans actually cover, I'm not confident that there are many physicians practicing holistic medicine in my local area.
I do recommend this book for someone who is learning about what could be causing their skin problems. However, there are no clear concrete solutions in this book other than finding a qualified medical professional who can help and guide you through the process of holistic healing.
of persistence to get though some of the more technical information, but the effort is worth it. This is an excellent guide for people who are ready and willing to make life-style changes that will pay off in the years to come. Check it out!
