A friend of mine got me this book. I didn't realize what a huge issue this is. But then, I was glad to see that there are actually things that I can do to protect myself through the use of everyday foods. I came to understand that radiation can be incorporated into the body, and that everyday foods can act like a shield, as the subtitle says, "HOW TO SHIELD YOURSELF FROM LOW LEVEL RADIATION". I had heard about Chernobyl and Fukushima, BUT I HADN'T COMPREHENDED THE ALL PERVASIVE FALLOUT FROM THESE ACCIDENTS AND THE EVERYDAY OPERATIONS OF NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS. In Chapter 6, I discovered that there are "radio"-protective foods such as cabbage and broccoli, and that all of this has been documented by official agencies. In fact there are 26 pages of references from published medical and scientific research - a rare find ! There are also lists of supplements that are radio-protective as well. I noticed that there is an AUDIBLE audio version available. You can listen to a 3 minute sample of it on the AMAZON site.

In the November 2014 edition of this landmark book, NY State nutritionist Sara Shannon provides much new information, added references, improved guidelines, and new internet links to extend the lessons presented in Radiation Protective Foods (RPF). Shannon introduces the concept of Selective Uptake to explain not only how human metabolism is vulnerable to absorbing environmental radiation in the first place, but also how her book's recommended dietary guidelines protect our bodies against the risk of that human internal radiation contamination.
Thanks to the Cold War era atmospheric testing of hundreds of nuclear weapons, and an ever-increasing list of nuclear disasters since then, our planet's biosphere will endure contamination from released natural and artificial radioisotopes for many thousands of human generations to come, essentially forever in terms of the human perception of time. That's why, if I had to suggest a name for the diet proposed in this book, I'd call it The Forever Diet.
Does Shannon's RPF diet work? How does it taste? I've followed these guidelines for over eight years, and the food I now eat is the most nutritious, tasty, and satisfying diet I have ever followed. When I bring a dish of food to potluck get-togethers, my dish is usually one of the first to get emptied! My food preparation and food shopping time is similar to my graduate student days when I relied on more packaged foods. Remember, you will no longer have to spend any time clipping grocery store coupons or selecting (and then later defrosting) huge chunks of meat.
Having a master's degree in public health, I can confirm that the RPF diet recommendations are consistent with the diet guidelines of many leading medical writers, such as Neal Barnard, MD, Caldwell Esselstyn, MD, T. Colin Campbell, PhD, John McDougall, MD, Gary Null, PhD, Michael Klaper, MD, and others.
Don't be fooled by the post-Fukushima promises of a few people in the nutrition field that *any* key supplement will protect you against internal radiation contamination. First of all, such supplements are costly. Secondly, any such supplements (as of 2016) have yet to be scientifically verified in a comprehensive way. One US medical doctor has recommended such supplements, but he has not published his full research results (such as organized clinical trials) to support that recommendation. Worst of all, any such medical or nutrition field writer endorsements so far have all had big financial incentives for their pro-supplement advice: For example, the leading "protective" supplement for human radiation exposure is sold through multi-level-marketing, which typically raises the consumer cost. To sum up, there are no scientifically verified and effective shortcuts to a radiation-protective lifestyle, no matter what any infomercials claim. The methods and resources described in US nutritionist Sara Shannon's Radiation Protective Foods, however, are supported by her (included) 30 pages of peer-reviewed academic journal articles originally published in the US and around the world, plus a number of academic book sources she includes, evidence that was published over a time period of recent decades. Shannon's sources and recommendations are the real deal. You can rely on her advice.
I recommend the book Radiation Protective Foods without reservations. By the way, nutritionist Shannon self-published this book to keep its purchase price as low as possible.

This book is excellent. It is a concise, well researched (30 pages of references) guide to protecting your health in a very toxic world, now made even more toxic with the Fukushima nuclear accident, still spewing. It addresses the issue of increased levels of low-level radiation, how it can damage us, how foods can protect our immune system, foods to avoid and supplements that are important to our radio-protective systems. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who cares about their own health and that of their family. It also includes recipes that should be on every cookbook shelf.

When Fukushima caused mass concern to those of us living in the Pacific Northwest not so long ago, a friend sent me this book recommending easy-to-follow guidelines as to how to best fortify our immune systems against low level radiation. I actually keep it on my kitchen cookbook shelf and have begun eating misos and sea vegetables on a regular basis thanks to Ms. Shannon. It is exceptionally well researched and must have 30+ pages of reference notes supporting her advice. More than ever these days it is evident that good health correlates directly to diet; here in Oregon we take what we eat very seriously and I appreciate so strongly this book and her loving efforts to keep us safe and educated to the hidden dangers that affect us more than we want to admit. Happy cooking!

definitely worth a read but am undecided whether I believe that all the items actually remove any toxicity from the body, think I need some more scientific tests/data to prove the point...
