The deck you stand on is plastic but is supported by steel struts underneath. The handlebar are adjustable up and down so can fit kids in a modicum of height ranges with a simple adjustment. The wider than normal tires help with stability issues, especially with the younger kids. While the larger front wheel makes it easier to steer and not lose balance going over sidewalk imperfections. Both of the kids liked the foot brake on the rear wheel.
I thought it seemed durable and should last a couple years. My only criticism is I would have liked to see the deck made of metal rather than just plastic supported by a metal frame and I think it would be a little small for a larger 6yo. It brought back nostalgic memories when I was a kid and had an all steel Radio Flyer wagon in red, of course, and my own kids had a Radio Flyer wagon with detachable wooden side rails
But considering the price, I thought it was a good buy and would therefore recommend it.
It took us about 20 minutes to unpack and assemble the Radio Flyer Scooter.
The plastic foot plate is supported by metal, the handle grips are thick enough rubber for small hands to get a solid grip. The overall design is ideal for toddlers 3-5. My granddaughter is 4, and you can see from the attached photo the size (both the foot plate and the height of the handlebars) is just right. The extra large front wheel and wider handlebars give a bit of assistance to little ones trying to learn to do several different things at the same time. There's a rear brake for additional control; however, at this time it's a non-issue, because we are letting her learn on a very small incline, so that speed isn't a concern. (This will change once she masters the basics and I will update as needed) This scooter is "pretty" to look at, and attracts a lot of attention. The paint scheme is gender neutral, which is a big plus for some. My granddaughter likes it a lot, but it is very challenging. It will take awhile for her to master the hand/foot coordination, plus maintaining her balance. Be warned, this is totally different from the three wheeled scooters (i.e. Razor Jr).
This scooter requires good balance and coordination, which is a good thing. These are skills rarely taught these days. With so many extra curricular activities being cut in school and kids spending the majority of their time with some kind of electronic -I love that this encourages kids to get outside and exercise. My granddaughter took a few spills and will take a lot more, but she's determined to get going on this scooter!
We really like this scooter and if you're shopping for a present, this would be a very good choice.
I'm sure there will be folks from my generation that will get nostalgic when they see the red, silver and white Radio Flyer design....It does bring back memories of days gone by spent pulling bright red wagons. Kudos to the company for giving a nod to the past, while changing with the times.
**These photos were taken immediately after we got it put together, she had to try just one time, before we went to buy a helmet, gloves, knee and elbow pads. Which I strongly recommend.
