Radio Shack Scanners
iScans are junk, I have a pro-18 iScan and batteries do not last, maybe 30-45 minutes per recharge if I'm lucky. I contacted Radio Shack on this charge issue numerous times without a resolution or a reply for that matter, if you buy an RS scanner get one without states and frequencies in it, get one with a number pad in it, get one you can program with your computer and program it yourself or thru radio reference.com buy one you have to program yourself or don't buy one from RS at all.. Pro-18 junk, the other is a Pro-96, I have very good luck with the Pro-96.

Actually, I would really like to give this product a rating of 4.5 Stars, but I am going to give 5 Stars if for nothing else other than to offset the 1-Star rating that the nutjob gave the Pro-668 solely based on his experiences with his Pro-18.
This is a very good scanner. Not perfect, but no scanner is. This scanner does all 3 main Digital Protocols (Phase 1, Phase 2, and x2TDMA). It has all frequencies in the US and Canada loaded on SD card inside of the scanner. Although using the scanner software (included with scanner) makes it a lot easier to customize your setup, it is super easy to scan just by putting your zip code into the scanner and it creates a full scan list for you. Using the zip code method, you can be up in running in about 4 minutes. Granted, you might be scanning a lot of extra frequencies that you might not want to hear (animal control, maintenance, road crews, etc.), but it is fairly easy to lock stuff out, especially if you use the software program. USB cable comes with scanner too.
Battery life is very good for a current model digital scanner. With backlight on during transmissions, a colored LED flashing, and an audible alert on certain channels, I am getting 6-7 hours per set of rechargeables. Not bad at all.
Get a larger antenna. Expertpower has them cheap, and it really does help.
I picked my 668 up for $164. Unbelievable price for a top of the line digital scanner.

I'd looked at many scanners before deciding on this one. Overall, the feature set is very rich and I'm happy with it. I'll start with what I like and then tell you what I don't.

I love the fact that it can scan multiple trunk systems and conventional simultaneously. I like the ability to import new locations and save multiple configurations as "v-scanners" without having to erase your original configuration. I like that it keeps a separate volume setting when you have headphones plugged in vs using the speaker. I like that you can completely program it via the computer (in fact, you just about have to). I like the fact that it monitors radio IDs so you can see or learn them to know who's transmitting. I also really appreciate that you can select discriminator output in the menu and it changes the headphone jack to discriminator out. The search features are also great. It has so many options, search by frequency, band, service... you can tell it to scan CB and it will. It will show you what channel they're on and everything. Same with FRS/GRMS, only it also tells you what tone is being used. There's so much more to this, these are just a few of the things I really like.

I don't like the built-in battery charger. It isn't smart and will continue to charge your batteries, potentially cooking them. A separate battery charger is a must. The antenna isn't that great, either. It's easy to change though. I also am not overly impressed with the audio output of the built-in speaker. At full volume it's not loud. In a quiet environment it's fine. In a car, it isn't. Very ridiculous is that it doesn't work with Windows 8 out of the box. You have to implement a workaround which you can find on the Whistler website in the FAQ section. The driver does not load and you have to do a workaround. Fortunately, it isn't too difficult. I would just expect this new of a product to work with a version of Windows that has been out as long as Windows 8 has. Also, you CAN program it from the keys on the unit, but you won't want to. Unless you're only importing from the database and not customizing at all, you will want to do this via the computer. I've also noticed that if you program too much into it, it scans a little slower than I'd hoped and you can miss the first part of a transmission. Keep your scan list a little shorter and it works great!

This display is awesome. I would buy it again without hesitation. Just know that it isn't 100% perfect, but none of them are. I believe this to be the best available right now.

Purchased this for my mother-in-law. It worked great in the beginning then the display went out. The scanner was purchased less than a year ago and no display. Downloaded, installed the software, had problems with the driver on Windows 10 Pro. Once I got the computer to install the correct driver, I performed all the updates hoping it would resolve the issue but the display still does not work. I even reset the scanner back to Factory settings with no success getting the display to work. It's just white , no text is displayed. It's not the batteries.

I am very disappointed in this item. All the Radio Shacks in my area have closed (52806) and we can not return the scanner to Amazon. My mother -in-law got about 2 - 3 months of use out of the scanner. She lives out of town and is older so she get me the scanner right away.

So, read what others are saying. Programming is hard, enough that there's a market to pay another $100 to have someone do it for you. Most frequencies are encrypted, which means you can't listen at all. I saw the comment "Is scanning dead?" and there was an argument about it. I would say, yes if you want to turn this one when you are driving somewhere and hear what's going on (0 to 5% chance of hearing the incident right in front of you). If you live in a large city, where you don't really care what you hear, and don't move the scanner, and are okay missing most radio calls, then go for it. I would think you could hear 30% of what's going on. If you own multiple scanners, have a few years of experience scanning as a intermediate (not novice) then maybe you could get up to about 50% of calls. Personally, I would return this now, but don't think it's fare to the seller, as the frequencies are encrypted and setup Not to scan.

This scanner is awesome for the price. To program it for your area just had to follow some simple instructions, type in your zip code and everything worked great! Would recommend for anyone who just wants to listen in without a lot of fuss.
